One of the first controversies faced by the government of José Antonio Kast involved the Ministry of the Environment, headed by Minister Francisca Toledo. Shortly after assuming office, she sent a formal request to the General Comptroller of the Republic to withdraw 43 supreme decrees that were in the process of being reviewed.
These initiatives had been proposed during the administration of Gabriel Boric and included the declaration of the Humboldt penguin as a natural monument, the creation of the Salar de Pedernales National Reserve, and the conservation plan for Darwin's frogs.
The situation drew criticism from the opposition and environmental groups, leading to the reintroduction of the decree to conserve Darwin's frogs on March 18th.
In an interview with Radio Duna, Minister Toledo explained that the decisions made in the first few days were "part of the initial setup phase."
"We have a mandate from the President of the Republic to conduct a comprehensive review of everything," she stated. "Of course, this review process also includes administrative acts that are currently under review by the Comptroller's Office."
She added: "It is very important for us to ensure that all documents and internal projects within the Ministry are well-designed so that they function properly when implemented."
In that regard, the Minister assured that they had already...

The scenarios for the projections provided by the Central Bank for 2026 "are developed in a particularly uncertain environment with significant risks." This is one of the statements made by the regulatory body in its March Monetary Policy Report (MPR).
While the bank hinted at changes in the projections in its statement following the Monetary Policy meeting on Tuesday, it now confirms and elaborates on these changes in this more detailed analysis of the 2026 outlook.
Specifically, the bank has reduced the projection for economic growth from a range of 2% to 3% to a range of 1.5% to 2.5%. "This revision is due to several factors, including changes in the international environment and weaker performance in the mining sector," the Central Bank states.
In this regard, the bank adds that "the outlook for household and business spending is being slightly revised downwards. This is largely due to the deterioration of the external situation, compounded by lower government spending. However, this is partially offset by the continued growth in income, improved expectations, and a portfolio of investment projects that is larger than in previous years."
Regarding inflation, the bank has raised its projection from the 3.2% forecast in December to 4%, further delaying the achievement of the Central Bank's target of 3%.
In its explanation, the Central Bank mentions that the revisions are concentrated in the short term and are primarily associated with the impact of the war on prices...

Without any display cases or product launches, the Ferrari space in Santiago temporarily shifted its focus: tables showcasing leather samples, large-format paint panels, and carbon fiber components replaced the traditional display of models, creating an experience centered on the process rather than the finished product.
The event unfolded as a journey through materials, decisions, and details. It became a space where the car, before it even exists, is defined in successive layers, through samples, conversations, and choices that are not always immediately apparent. Inside, away from the usual pace of a dealership,
The event, called "Atelier Trunk Show," replicated a format that the brand uses in cities like New York, bringing a small group of Chilean clients closer to a little-known aspect of the industry: the personalized configuration of a vehicle. It wasn't about choosing from pre-defined options, but about building a unique aesthetic and material proposition from scratch, guided by specialists from the company.
Throughout the day, each participant progressed on their own project, exploring combinations of exterior colors, interior textures, and finishes that are not typically available in standard configurators. At the same time, the technical team explained how these choices relate to the functional aspects of the car, from the use of materials to the integration of specific elements in the…

A 20-year-old man died early Wednesday morning after being shot while inside a vehicle in the Cerro Navia district.
The incident occurred around 2:00 AM, and the victim was shot by unknown individuals, the cause of which is under investigation.
According to prosecutor Rubén Salas of the ECOH (Environmental Crimes and Organized Crime) unit, "The information we have today is preliminary. It involves finding a victim inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound. There is a spent bullet casing related to the impact the victim sustained, and some other evidence that might suggest this is related to a vehicle theft or something similar."
Despite this, Salas added, "The victim's cell phone is present, and the vehicle in which the victim was traveling is also at the scene and has not been stolen. Therefore, there are some items that belong to the victim and are still at the scene."
He stated that it is neither possible to rule out nor confirm that the crime is linked to organized crime.
The victim was a 20-year-old Chilean man. "He had some prior records, but those records are for common crimes, and he is not directly linked to organized crime."
The incident is being investigated by personnel from the ECOH prosecutor's office in collaboration with the PDI (Criminal Investigation Agency).

On Tuesday, protests erupted in response to the announcement made by the government of José Antonio Kast regarding the historically high increase in fuel prices. Disruptions to the metro service and pot-banging demonstrations were part of the protests against the measure.
It should be noted that on Monday, the Minister of Finance, Jorge Quiroz, announced that the price of gasoline and diesel would increase this Thursday.
According to calculations made by the authorities, the price of 93 octane gasoline would increase by $370 pesos per liter, and the price of diesel would increase by $580 pesos per liter.
In light of this increase, and while discussions were underway regarding a package of measures to mitigate the rise in paraffin prices and other containment measures, protests took place in Santiago.
In the afternoon, the Metro company reported a service disruption at the Los Leones station on Line 1, during the peak evening rush hour, as a group of students sat on the platform edge, forcing the shutdown of the track's power supply to prevent a more serious incident.
The state-owned company stated that "due to people sitting on the platform, we experienced a power outage at the Los Leones station," after which service was restored and efforts were made to adjust the frequency of trains affected by the teenagers, during the period of highest passenger traffic.
Another expression of discontent took place in some neighborhoods of central Santiago starting at 8:00 PM, where residents...

Negotiations regarding the formation of the Senate's legislative committees continued this Tuesday near the Congress building in Valparaíso.
With the goal of finalizing the list of members before the start of the plenary session at 4:00 PM, the opposition parties – grouped into two parliamentary committees – met twice on Monday, even late into the night.
The discussions continued throughout the entire session. Even the President of the Senate, Paulina Núñez (RN), went to the PPD committee, where they were finalizing the document, to monitor the progress of those discussions.
While some senators expressed optimism and claimed that an agreement had already been reached, the opposition legislators continued to withhold the document from being presented to the plenary session.
Sources within the opposition revealed that there were still outstanding issues that made it impossible to finalize the agreement. One of these issues was the allocation of seats on the Health Committee.
According to sources within the committees, there are several parties interested in having representation on this legislative committee. While Senators Iván Flores (DC) and Juan Luis Castro (PS) intend to remain on the Health Committee, other new senators, such as Karol Cariola (PC) and Beatriz Sánchez (FA), also want to be part of this committee.
The Security Committee is another point of contention that persists within the opposition committees.
According to sources within the opposition, these disagreements are related to the allocation of seats…

Supported by her three deputy secretaries and numerous advisors, María Paz Arzola officially debuted in her role as Minister of Education this Tuesday at the Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, an institution she had attended on several occasions as an expert.
The occasion allowed her to present the legislative priorities of the ministry, which she has headed for nearly two weeks.
The Secretary of State delivered a presentation consisting of 69 slides, in which, as has been the practice of the government, she aimed to outline the financial situation she found at the Ministry of Education. "It is not normal," she stated. She identified at least eight programs with financial deficits, including school subsidies and Public Local Education Services (SLEP).
"This restricts us in terms of funding, but we also see it as an opportunity to implement our own priorities, which involve shifting some of the focus from higher education to other levels and taking responsibility for the deficit, seeking ways to reallocate resources," she said.
She then detailed her vision for the various levels of education and the guiding principles associated with them, as well as her respective proposals. In the school sector, the key areas are accessibility, a focus on learning, positive social interaction, and increased opportunities for quality education.
In this regard, the proposals aim to…

In early March, Paulina Vodanovic, the president of the Socialist Party, warned the government of José Antonio Kast that failing to support Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for the Secretary-General of the United Nations could have "political consequences."
This Tuesday, the President announced that Chile had withdrawn its support for the candidacy. Vodanovic, however, toned down her warning, despite the strong displeasure expressed by all opposition representatives towards the presidential palace, La Moneda.
"It is evident that withdrawing support from the most important leader that the center and the left have in Chile has consequences. But there isn't a specific consequence that can be singled out," she said.
How much weight did the candidacy lose without the support of its own country?
President Bachelet has the support of the country, but she lacks the support of the government. It is important to express that support in some way, and that other governments also embrace the idea of supporting the candidacy. Mexico and Brazil, for example, already provide consistent and very important support. Of course, we regret that the government decided to withdraw its support, but we will not stand idly by.
But doesn't this damage credibility in the eyes of the rest of the countries?
All countries know that we are governed by the far-right, and that not supporting the candidacy also has an ideological and political meaning. I reiterate, it's not the country itself, but the government...

Representatives from Chile's three major municipal associations met with Alejandro Irarrázaval, the head of advisors to the President, at the presidential palace, La Moneda, on Tuesday. This meeting was crucial for coordinating the municipalities' response to the crisis facing the government, which arose due to the increase in fuel prices and the cessation of funding for the Fuel Price Stabilization Mechanism (Mepco).
Since the outbreak of the international armed conflict – which has been ongoing for over four weeks with attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran – the price of oil has risen, prompting the government to make changes to the Mepco. The executive branch initially refused to contain the price increase, which will ultimately result in a rise of $370 for gasoline and $580 for diesel, starting this Thursday. The government announced some mitigating measures, such as suspending a planned increase in the public transportation system.
While the opposition had previously been the most vocal critics of President José Antonio Kast's government, on Tuesday, the mayors took center stage, criticizing La Moneda, arguing that the issue directly affects the people.
Following the meeting that brought together the Chilean Association of Municipalities (ACHM), the Association of Municipalities of Chile (AMUCH), and the Association of Rural Municipalities (AMUR) at La Moneda, the president of the ACHM, Gustavo Ales…

A protest led by high school students forced the temporary shutdown of Line 1 of the Santiago Metro on Tuesday at the Los Leones station, after a group of teenagers staged a demonstration inside the facility.
According to preliminary information, the students entered the platform and sat on the edge of the tracks, chanting slogans in response to the recent economic measures announced by the government of President José Antonio Kast.
The action forced a complete halt to train service on that section of the line, causing a disruption to one of the most heavily used lines in the capital, especially during peak passenger hours.
Santiago Metro reported that the situation led to a security procedure that included cutting off power to the tracks.
"Due to people sitting on the platform, we experienced a power outage at the Los Leones station. We have now restored power and are working to improve service frequency," the company stated through its official channels.
So far, no arrests have been reported, and there have been no major incidents associated with the demonstration, while authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further disruptions to the transportation network.

DEAR EDITOR:
The recent increase in fuel prices – the largest in 46 years – has understandably caused concern among citizens. However, it is crucial not to lose sight of its origin: the war in the Middle East has put a strain on the international oil market, causing its value to rise sharply. Chile, which produces virtually no crude oil, relies on its import, so this price increase is due much more to external factors than to decisions made by the government of President José Antonio Kast.
The figures are compelling. An increase of $370 per liter for gasoline and $580 for diesel not only affects drivers, but also impacts the entire production chain, especially the transportation of food. Blaming local authorities is not only inaccurate, but also diverts the debate from the essential issue: how to deal with a shock that we do not control.
In this context, it is necessary to review the specific tax on fuels. In an extraordinary situation like the current one, maintaining this tax burden unchanged only deepens the impact on families. A reduction or temporary suspension, at least while the conflict lasts, seems like a reasonable measure to alleviate the burden on Chilean citizens facing a crisis that, clearly, we did not provoke.

The national leadership of the Christian Democratic Party (DC) issued strong criticisms this Tuesday regarding the initial decisions of President José Antonio Kast's government, accusing it of being "ideologically driven" and warning about its potential effects on the country's economy and governance.
In a public statement, the party expressed its "concern and rejection" of the policies adopted by the executive branch in the first days of the government, stating that these do not reflect a management approach based on gradualism or social responsibility.
According to the statement, this direction in government policy "creates uncertainty among citizens and makes it difficult to build the broad agreements that the country urgently needs."
Criticism of the economic direction
One of the main areas of criticism focuses on the economic measures promoted by the government.
The DC described the proposal to reduce taxes on large companies and high-income individuals as "inappropriate and regressive."
Furthermore, they criticized the decision to pass the cost of rising fuel prices on to consumers, warning that it will have a direct impact on the middle class and the most vulnerable sectors.
"This decision will severely impact the cost of living for the middle class and the most vulnerable families in the country," the statement said, referring to the announced increase in gasoline and diesel prices.

Today, the government of President José Antonio Kast withdrew its support for Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), a candidacy that was presented during the previous administration and supported by Mexico and Brazil.
Regarding this decision, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "the proliferation of candidacies from countries in Latin America and the differences with some of the key players involved in this process make this candidacy unviable and jeopardize its potential success."
In response, a group of former ministers and deputy ministers of Foreign Affairs from the administrations of the Concertación coalition and of Gabriel Boric released a letter in which they expressed their regret over the government's decision and, at the same time, reaffirmed their support for the former president's candidacy. Bachelet herself stated that she would continue her campaign for the position with the support of Brazil and Mexico.
The letter is signed by former foreign ministers Mariano Fernández, Carlos Figueroa, José Miguel Insulza, Heraldo Muñoz, Antonia Urrejola, Juan Gabriel Valdés, Alberto van Klaveren, and Ignacio Walker, as well as former deputy ministers Cristián Barros, Gloria de la Fuente, and Edgardo Riveros.

The former president, Michelle Bachelet, released a statement this Tuesday afternoon confirming that she will continue her candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
This comes after the government of José Antonio Kast announced that it would withdraw Chile's official support for her candidacy, considering it "unviable."
Bachelet's candidacy was registered in February, with the support of Brazil and Mexico.
"I appreciate the support and confidence that the State of Chile initially expressed when publicly presenting this candidacy last September and formalizing it in February. I understand that the definitions of foreign policy can vary with new administrations," the former president stated in a text released by her office.
Bachelet then stated that, as someone who has led the country on two occasions, she understands "this decision as part of the prerogatives of the person who currently heads the government."
"Reforming and strengthening the multilateral system is not a slogan; it is an urgent need to improve people's lives. My willingness to contribute to this challenge remains unchanged; therefore, I will continue working with the governments of Brazil and Mexico, who have nominated my name, reaffirming the collective nature of this project," the former president said.
The former president emphasized that her candidacy "is based on a shared vision regarding the need to strengthen the international system..."

The 3% budget cut mandated by the Ministry of Finance for all other government departments under the administration of José Antonio Kast is already having concrete effects, particularly in the development of advanced human capital. The Ministry of Science has decided to reduce scholarships for studies abroad this year.
The Minister herself, Ximena Lincolao, explicitly stated this before the Science Committee of the Chamber of Deputies on Monday: one of the areas targeted for cuts will be master's and postdoctoral programs abroad, two historically crucial areas for the internationalization of Chilean researchers.
It is worth noting, however, that these scholarships have been declining in recent years. In the case of master's programs abroad, the number of scholarships decreased from 217 in 2022 to 136 in 2023, and then to 78 in 2024. For 2025, 80 slots are projected. The reduction is equally significant for postdoctoral programs. The number of scholarships for international studies decreased from 57 in 2022 to 27 in 2023 and 22 in 2024. In total, last year there were 102 students receiving master's and postdoctoral scholarships to study outside of Chile. According to Lincolao, each scholarship involves an expenditure of between 60 and 80 million pesos, plus ongoing support for the professional for at least 16 years.
Meanwhile, doctoral scholarships, which the government announced it wants to prioritize for studies within Chile and maintain abroad, are also subject to the downward trend. The number of scholarships for studying abroad decreased from 231 in 2022 to 118 in 2023, 113 in 2024, and 49...

SANTIAGO, Chile – The government of José Antonio Kast has decided to withdraw Chile's support for Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), a decision that marks a shift in the country's foreign policy and raises questions about the region's influence in the selection of the next head of the organization.
Bachelet's candidacy had been supported by the previous government of Gabriel Boric, with the joint backing of Brazil and Mexico. However, the new Chilean administration believes that the international landscape and the lack of regional consensus significantly hinder her chances. "The dispersion of candidacies from Latin American countries and the differences with some of the key players involved in this process make this candidacy and its potential success unfeasible," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official statement.
The government added that both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chilean embassies will cease actively promoting Bachelet's candidacy. However, it clarified that if the former president decides to continue her campaign, Chile will refrain from supporting any other candidate, in recognition of her international track record.

The Foreign Minister was asked whether these governments had been formally informed of this decision, and he responded that the process was underway through diplomatic missions at the UN.
He also emphasized that "this is a sovereign decision of the Chilean government."
"The government believes that the candidacy is not viable, and there are two main reasons. The first is the high number of Latin American candidates, and the second is information we have gathered from key players in this process, who have expressed some differences," Pérez Mackenna stated, echoing information previously released in a statement from the Ministry of Relations with the Government.

"Supporting a figure of Bachelet's stature was a duty of the state, not an ideological favor. Foreign policy should be a policy of the state and cannot be driven from a partisan position or with petty tactics."
José Toro Kemp, Secretary-General of the PPD, argued that this decision constitutes a strategy by the Executive branch to "divert attention" from the rising price of fuels.
"What are we to expect now? Will the President pardon Maturana or Krassnoff if the price of gasoline rises another 100 pesos, just to divert attention?" the PPD leader asked.

The Minister of Finance, Jorge Quiroz, announced a package of seven measures this Monday to address the sharp increase in fuel prices, a situation exacerbated by the war in the Middle East and its effects on the global energy market.
The plan comes alongside a historic price increase that will take effect this Thursday, with estimated increases of up to $370 per liter for gasoline and nearly $580 for diesel. These figures reflect the impact of an international shock that has driven prices up in just a few weeks.
According to the minister, the conflict has caused a significant disruption in global oil trade, particularly due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to increases of up to 60% in diesel and 30% in gasoline prices internationally.
In this regard, the head of the Ministry of Finance emphasized that the country is facing this crisis with a complex fiscal situation, which limits the ability to continue cushioning prices through the MEPCO (a subsidy mechanism).
"The cost of maintaining current prices is $160 million per week," he warned, pointing out that maintaining that level of subsidy is unsustainable for the national treasury.

Negotiations between different factions in the Senate will continue until Tuesday morning, with the aim of reaching an administrative agreement.
While part of the agreement has already been realized with the election of Paulina Núñez (RN) as president of the Upper House, the composition of the legislative committees still needs to be resolved. These committees are crucial for the legislative process, as they can either expedite or block proposed legislation.
The problem is that until the committees are formed, no new bills can be processed, as they must first be reviewed by these legislative bodies.
This situation has caused particular concern at the presidential palace, which intends to introduce a legal amendment this week to mitigate the increase in fuel prices, especially paraffin, which will be presented to the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday.
To prevent this from affecting a government measure aimed at helping the most vulnerable sectors of society, the leaders of the different factions have decided to make an exception and allow the Finance Committee to be formed, even if there is no full agreement on the other matters. Furthermore, it has been agreed that, at least for the first year, this strategically important committee (responsible for analyzing any tax changes or initiatives with fiscal implications) will be chaired by Senator Javier Macaya (UDI).
