Panama has officially launched a new national postal code system that integrates geolocation technology to replace informal references with precise addresses.
In the country, it is common for directions to a location to rely on landmarks such as a store, a street corner, or even a tree in the surrounding area.
"Go straight, turn onto the first street, continue a little further, and where there's a power pole that's always lit, two houses down, next to the mango tree, that's where you'll find the place you're looking for," is a typical example of how people try to locate a destination.
Now, through the platform www.codigospostalespanama.com.pa, citizens will be able to locate exact addresses and obtain specific postal codes to expedite the shipment of goods, according to the Directorate of Post and Telecommunications (COTEL).
The new system will also allow for faster, more secure, and reliable receipt of packages, online purchases, and document delivery, not only for the national postal service but also for anyone who needs a clear address.
This advancement, the organization added in a press release, is a fundamental step towards the formalization of postal services and greater efficiency in the country's communications.
"It represents the beginning of the modernization and transformation of the postal system in Panama, starting with the accurate location of residences..."

The presidential sash that Laura Fernández wore during her inauguration on Friday not only represents the transfer of power in Costa Rica, but also embodies a story of hard work, dedication, and family pride. Behind its creation are the hands of two sisters.
María del Rosario Camacho, a sewing instructor with 26 years of experience, was responsible for embroidering the national coat of arms on Fernández's sash. She recounted the beginning of this project to the "Entretenimiento Repretel" program: "I was contacted by the Presidential Palace in February to see if I would agree to create the presidential sash for Mrs. Laura Fernández, and I said yes, with great pleasure. One of the questions they asked me was what the price of the sash would be, and I told them that it is priceless, because she is the president of our country, the president of all Costa Ricans, and that fills us with pride, knowing that we are going to create something with all our love for the president of all Costa Ricans."
Her sister, María Elena, also participated in the project. Although she now only undertakes special projects, her career in sewing has been extensive.
"It is very emotional, very rewarding. What motivates me? Well, it's because she is the president of the Republic, the president of all Costa Ricans," said María Elena.
A tradition in Costa Rican presidential history
The work of the Camacho sisters is not new in Costa Rican presidential history. "When you see someone wearing it, it's..."

The Alston's singing mouse is a rodent that inhabits forests in Central and South America, and it is known for its ability to communicate through sounds that scientists have described as a song.
Within groups, they are capable of singing songs, without interrupting each other until their companions finish.
The characteristics of this species have led scientists to wonder what allows them to maintain complex conversations without the help of human brains.
Now, new research suggests that the answer may be found.
A study published in early May in the journal Nature concluded that the Alston's singing mouse has the same mutation that allows humans to speak.
The authors determined that an expansion of existing neural pathways allowed these rodents to expand their vocal repertoire.
They speculate that this mutation is the same one that paved the way for the development of human language.
How the study discovered that the Alston's singing mouse has the same mutation that allows humans to speak:
Arkarup Banerjee, a biologist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and co-author of the study, said in statements collected by the New York Times that, previously, in 2019, the team discovered that the back-and-forth songs of this species were very similar to human conversations.
However, when they examined the brains of Alston's singing mice and non-singing laboratory mice, they did not find significant differences.
This led them to decide…

Mothers in the United States and Canada will receive special bouquets this year, thanks to a significant increase in the export of flowers from Guatemala. This season, coinciding with Mother's Day, is a crucial period for Guatemalan foreign trade. This growth not only strengthens the presence of Guatemalan flowers in international florists and supermarkets, but also directly stimulates the local agricultural economy, focusing on the diversification of species and innovation in finished products. According to the Ornamental Plants, Foliage, and Flowers Commission of the Exporters Association (AGEXPORT), the holiday causes national producers to increase their exports by up to 10%, and in some cases, triple production to meet the growing demand, particularly from the American market, the main destination for these shipments, according to national media reports.
During the sales period related to Mother's Day, the Guatemalan flower, foliage, and ornamental plant industry generates annual sales ranging between USD 120 million and USD 123 million, with cut flowers contributing between USD 50 million and USD 60 million. According to AGEXPORT, this activity generates approximately 5,000 jobs, mostly in rural areas and predominantly held by women.
The answer to the central question about the ongoing phenomenon is clear: Guatemalan flower exports are growing substantially during this period...

The sculptor J. Óscar Molina has become the central figure in a cultural achievement for El Salvador: for the first time, the country inaugurated its own pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, the most prestigious international event in contemporary art.
According to exibart, Molina's presence represents an unprecedented milestone for the Salvadoran art scene, as his project "Cartographies of Displacement" brings the testimony of Salvadoran migration and memory to the center of global debate.
The project, curated by Alejandra Cabezas, revolves around the sculptural series "Children of the World," in which Molina explores displacement as an existential condition. Exibart detailed that the artist approaches this phenomenon from an intimate and material perspective: "The work addresses displacement not as an event that must be illustrated, but as a condition that is inhabited: a form of existence marked by movement, memory, and the constant negotiation between past, present, and imagined futures." Each sculpture embodies pressure, weight, and adaptation, evoking the burden of personal and collective stories.
The project moves away from spectacular representations of migration and opts for a contemplative language, in which concrete and bronze convey the traces of mobility and uprooting.

The National Migration Service (SNM) issued a statement addressed to Venezuelan citizens residing in Panama, informing them that those who wish to voluntarily return to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela can contact the institution's offices nationwide or call the designated number to receive information about the process.
The statement specifies that interested individuals must meet certain requirements, including presenting a passport, travel permit, or national identification card, as well as the corresponding documentation for their companions.
In cases where these documents are not available, the authorities indicated that the citizens will remain in migrant shelters while the travel permit and commercial ticket are processed, as part of a procedure designed to ensure an orderly and safe return.
The SNM clarified that Venezuelan citizens have until Wednesday, May 13th, to visit the offices and complete the required registration, which will facilitate the coordination of the necessary transportation.
This process will be fully funded as part of a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration (MOU) signed between the governments of Panama and the United States, within the framework of a regional strategy to promote orderly, safe, and regular migration.
Meanwhile, in the capital city, there has been an increase in the presence of Venezuelan migrants returning from the north of the continent…

A new blow has been dealt to the clandestine logistics network of the MS-13 gang in the rural area of Olocuilta. Soldiers from the El Salvador Armed Forces dismantled a hidden camp located in the upper part of the Casa Loma housing development. This operation, which is part of the government's offensive against criminal organizations, continues the strategy of shutting down the spaces these groups use as shelters and operational centers, making it more difficult for remnants to reorganize, according to Defense Minister René Francis Merino Monroy in his official account.
Among the items found were a backpack containing 29 packets of crack cocaine, two magazines with 44 rounds of 5.56mm and .22 caliber ammunition, a digital scale, a calculator, two cell phones with their chargers, tools for maintaining weapons, a knife, and clothing. According to Minister Merino Monroy, these findings demonstrate the frequent use of mobile camps to store drugs, ammunition, and essential logistical resources for the operation of clandestine organizations.
The government of El Salvador has destroyed more than 200 clandestine gang camps since 2022.
The dismantling of this new illegal space adds to a total of more than 200 camps destroyed by authorities since the beginning of the intensified offensive against gangs in 2022, as part of the State of Exception and the Territorial Control Plan, according to official data.

In the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Carthage, on the afternoon of Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Bishop of Limón and President of the Episcopal Conference of Costa Rica, Monsignor Javier Román, presided over the Eucharistic celebration during which President Laura Fernández publicly began her term in office. During the homily, Román emphasized the significance of a head of state coming to entrust her administration to the Virgin of the Angels, and he stressed that the beginning of this new national period requires spiritual strength to face the decisions and burdens that come with political responsibility.
The ceremony held particular significance as it was only the second time in the history of Costa Rica that a woman had assumed the presidency, a fact that Román underscored as a decisive step for the nation. The bishop reminded those present that behind every authority, there is a person with needs for serenity and peace in the face of the increasing pressures of power: "Because behind every investiture, there is a person; a heart that needs serenity and peace so as not to become hardened in the midst of so many pressures," the prelate said during the Mass.
At the end of the Eucharist, President Fernández symbolically placed her presidential sash before the image of the Virgin, known as the "Negrita" (Little Black One) of the Angels, and participated in a prayer seeking her protection and guidance for the term that is beginning, a significant act that marked the…

In an operation conducted in the waters off the southern coast of Costa Rica, the National Coast Guard Service (SNG), in coordination with the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), announced this Saturday that they had intercepted a vessel carrying more than one ton of suspected drugs.
The operation, carried out during the early morning hours, resulted in the arrest of two crew members of Colombian nationality and the seizure of a significant quantity of what authorities believe to be cocaine and marijuana.
According to information released by the Ministry of Public Security, the police action was triggered after detecting a suspicious vessel, approximately 38 feet in length, navigating in the southern Pacific maritime zone. The rapid deployment of a Costa Rican Coast Guard interceptor allowed officers to board the boat and proceed with its inspection.
Inside the vessel, authorities discovered approximately 60 bales, each containing around 20 packages, representing a load of what appears to be more than one ton of drugs, according to preliminary estimates from law enforcement agencies. In addition to the illicit cargo, officers found 23 containers, presumably used for transporting fuel, suggesting that the journey was planned for long distances at sea.
The detainees and the seized cargo will be turned over to the judicial authorities.

A 30-year-old Honduran citizen has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison by a U.S. federal court after being found guilty of participating in drug trafficking operations involving methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as illegally re-entering the country after previously being deported.
The sentence was handed down in the U.S. District Court in Seattle and announced by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd.
The defendant, identified as Jorge Aguilar Martínez, was arrested in October 2025 during an operation led by federal authorities.
During the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge James Robart strongly questioned the Honduran citizen's behavior and stated that his actions were solely motivated by financial gain, without considering the deadly consequences that fentanyl trafficking has on thousands of American families.
"Fentanyl pills have proven to be lethal," Judge Robart said to the court.
He also warned about how easily a single dose can cause death. "It is very easy to obtain a fentanyl pill that contains a lethal dose," he added.
According to court documents, Aguilar Martínez acted as an intermediary between a drug buyer who was cooperating with authorities and several individuals who claimed to have the ability to supply large quantities of methamphetamine.

With just one month to go until the World Cup, the 48 national teams in this new format are eagerly anticipating this unprecedented edition. It will be a longer tournament, filled with high expectations, and with the potential to equal or break several records in the history of the world's biggest football event.
The event will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, and one of its highlights will be a new chapter in the eternal rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who will compete in their sixth edition in North America.
Argentina, the current champion after defeating France in the final of Qatar 2022, has the opportunity to add a fourth star to their jersey, the same number already worn by the teams of Italy and Germany. However, Argentina cannot reach the record of five World Cup titles held only by Brazil, a record that, at least this season, only Germany can potentially tie.
However, the South American team has some records to its name that it could potentially improve or worsen in North America. Currently, Lionel Scaloni's team is the fifth with the most draws, five behind the English national team, which has 22 in 16 participations. However, the team in white and blue also stands out in the worst aspects after 18 World Cups, as they are only surpassed by Mexico in the historical number of defeats.
Of course, they also share the honor of being part of the most repeated rivalry in nearly 100 years of history...

Boca Juniors was eliminated from the Argentine Apertura tournament after losing 3-2 to Huracán at La Bombonera. The team, known as "los xeneizes," suffered a defeat in the round of 16 and is now facing a crisis. UC, one of Boca Juniors' rivals in the Copa Libertadores, is closely watching the developments on the other side of the Andes.
The team, coached by Claudio Úbeda, quickly found themselves at a disadvantage. Leonardo Gil opened the scoring for the visitors in the 5th minute with a shot inside the area. The former Colo Colo player caused a surprise with his early goal. Boca Juniors tried to react, but were repeatedly thwarted by goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.

The play involved the former goalkeeper of UC, who was a key player at that point. With the score tied, the match went into extra time.
In extra time, Huracán regained the lead. The 2-1 goal came from a penalty converted by Óscar Romero in the 94th minute. Restricting migration routes does not stop the movement of people; instead, it pushes them towards more dangerous paths. This is the central conclusion of the World Migration Report 2026, published this month by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) during the International Migration Review Forum in New York, and which places Central America at the heart of one of the most complex demographic transformations on the continent.
As of mid-2024, the world had 304 million international migrants, equivalent to 3.7% of the global population. Despite this number, the IOM emphasizes that migration remains the exception: the majority of people remain in their country of birth.
Central America in the continent's major migration corridors
In 2024, over 27 million people originating from Latin America and the Caribbean resided in North America, primarily in the United States, a trend that has been steadily increasing since 1990.
The Mexico-United States corridor, with nearly 11 million migrants, remains the most heavily trafficked in the world.
Within the region, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala have experienced the highest proportional population growth in Central America over the past 20 years, driven by both human mobility and demographic changes.
At the same time, approximately 14 million Latin American and Caribbean migrants resided in other countries in the region in 2024, with the Venezuelan crisis being a primary factor...

Anti-intellectualism – the idea that there exists a harmful or parasitic intellectual elite that must be combatted for the benefit of the people – is older than dirt.
And it manifests itself from both ends of the political spectrum.
On the left, we see it in the Maoist Cultural Revolution, which sent academics to "re-educate" in the countryside, and in the Khmer Rouge, which considered anyone who wore glasses, spoke a foreign language, or read books to be a counter-revolutionary.
On the right, we see it in the attacks on "degenerate artists" and "conspiratorial intellectuals" that characterize fascism, often culminating in book burnings, a ritual of purification that we witnessed in Chile in 1973, while the dictatorship exiled intellectuals, intervened in universities, and closed down "suspicious" departments like sociology or theater: critical thinking was considered subversive; the purpose of university was to learn a trade and to obey authority.
In contemporary politics, the monster of anti-intellectualism has been given new life.
In the United States, the government is targeting universities, creating lists of prohibited research topics, and removing books by "dangerous" authors like Isabel Allende or Ray Bradbury from school libraries.
In Argentina, the president is leading a furious barrage of attacks and personal insults against scientists, artists, intellectuals, and what he calls "socialist lies" in science.

Before becoming one of the most internationally recognized comedians in the country, Luis Alberto Miranda Espinosa (31) held a few beliefs. But, fortunately, he was wrong.
For example, he thought that humor in Chile was limited to what was shown at the Viña del Mar festival: adult men, almost all in suits and ties, delivering short jokes under a rigid format that didn't include audience interaction, and where they generally laughed at others, never at themselves.
Then, in a casino in Coquimbo, the region where he was born, he saw Edo Caroe, Pedro Ruminot, and Felipe Avello.
"They were comedians of a different style. They had dark humor, a different way of telling stories. Before, comedians had a much more formal structure: suits, elegance. I said to myself, 'I will never be a comedian in a suit, because I imagined how difficult it would be to put on a shirt and button it.' Also, it seemed like comedians went directly from nowhere to the Viña del Mar festival; there were no previous performances in bars, casinos, or theaters. Everything revolved around television. I said, 'I will never reach that level.' But Edo and Pedro showed me another style, a more real one. They updated humor and inspired me to do it," he admits in this conversation via Zoom with Culto.
When he decided to dedicate himself to making people laugh, Miranda also believed that his first international appearances would only be attended by Chileans living abroad, a common occurrence for a comedian...

The key concepts of the latest report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), titled "Public Management in Latin America and the Caribbean 2025: A Perspective," are state innovation, government transformation, CEPAL, Central America, and the Dominican Republic.
The document argues that countries in the region must move beyond simply reacting to problems and instead anticipate, coordinate, and lead structural changes, especially in the face of increasing uncertainty and complexity.
In this context, public innovation moves beyond being a mere technical supplement and becomes the mechanism for integrating vision, capabilities, and action.
The report emphasizes the need for a strong institutional framework, clear rules, and well-trained teams, whose operations should not depend on the initiatives of a single administration.
Innovation strengthens democratic legitimacy and enables the formation of social and political alliances capable of supporting reforms of greater scope.
Through concrete examples, ECLAC demonstrates how innovation is already being implemented in the region. In El Salvador and Guatemala, the Acceleration Labs of the United Nations Development Programme promote collaborative responses to challenges such as migration and water management, based on experimentation and shared learning.
In the Dominican Republic, the creation of the Water Sector Cabinet and the Dominican Water Pact 2021…

The dream became a reality. The Spanish Under-17 women's team made history by achieving a heroic qualification for the World Cup in that category. Under the guidance of Vanessa Arauz, the team narrowly defeated Ecuador, 2-1, and secured a spot in the youth world championship, which will be held in Morocco from October 17th to November 7th.
The national women's team earned a place in the World Cup, which will be held for the second consecutive year in Moroccan territory. The tournament, like the men's version, began to be held annually starting with the 2025 edition.
This is the third time that the Spanish team has qualified for the World Cup in this category. The previous two times were in 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago and in 2022 in India.
A hard-fought victory
The Ecuadorian team started the match on a strong footing at the Ameliano Villeta stadium in Paraguay. "La Tri" imposed their game, which was predominantly physical, putting pressure on the Spanish team with an aggressive high press. However, this was just the first impression.
It seemed that Chile was struggling to find their rhythm, but gradually they began to display their characteristic teamwork. The technical skills of the national team started to emerge. In fact, a truly spectacular goal broke the deadlock, thanks to a familiar name.

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has accepted jurisdiction to hear the lawsuit filed by the province of La Pampa against the National Government. The case will be processed in Buenos Aires, following a decision signed by judges Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz, and Ricardo Lorenzetti last Thursday, May 7th.
The decision also ordered that the National Government be formally notified: it was given a 60-day period to submit its formal response to the lawsuit, as stipulated by the procedure in such cases.
La Pampa's claim concerns a portion of the Federal Tax Sharing Law and seeks to have 1% of the funds currently allocated to the National Treasury Contribution Fund distributed daily and automatically among the provinces.
This decision represents a new chapter in the ongoing discussion between provincial and national governments regarding the distribution of resources, and it could have an impact on the management of funds that exceed several billion pesos.

The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica has issued an alert following the confirmation of the sixth positive case of chikungunya within the national territory so far in 2026. This new finding highlights the importance of vector control measures and surveillance at points of entry into the country, given that the transmission dynamics continue to show a pattern linked to international travel.
According to the technical report from the health authorities, the diagnosis was initially made at a medical center of the Costa Rican Social Security System (CCSS). Subsequently, the validity of the result was confirmed by the laboratory of the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA), an institution responsible for genomic and virological surveillance in the country.
The case detected involves a 53-year-old woman, a resident of the canton of Alajuelita. Following an epidemiological field investigation, it was determined that the patient had a recent travel history to Nicaragua.
Due to this sequence of events, the Ministry of Health has preliminarily classified this incident as an imported case, meaning that the infection did not occur locally within the community, but rather during the patient's stay abroad.
With this new report, the official statistics now record a total of six people affected by the virus this year. The geographical distribution of the cases…

El Salvador is facing one of the most challenging weeks in terms of weather conditions this year (2026). The combination of record temperatures and the arrival of external atmospheric phenomena has put the authorities of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) on high alert. They are warning about an increase in the perceived temperature and a stifling atmosphere that will affect most of the national territory.
Yesterday, May 8th, the city of San Miguel became the epicenter of the extreme heat, recording a perceived temperature of 52°C. This figure is significant; it reflects a suffocatingly hot environment that pushes the physical limits of the residents.
According to forecasts, this situation is not isolated, but rather a prelude to a heatwave that could intensify in the coming days due to the lack of cloud cover and atmospheric stability.
The MARN has detailed that maximum temperatures will reach critical levels in strategic areas of the country:
Nueva Concepción, Chalatenango: Maximum temperatures of up to 39°C are expected.
San Miguel and La Unión: The thermometer will reach 38°C.
La Libertad: Temperatures of up to 37°C are predicted.
With an average weekly temperature of 34.4°C, the authorities have not ruled out that other areas of the country, in addition to those mentioned, may begin to record atypical values, and they are maintaining constant monitoring of the northern and eastern regions.

In Honduras, where thousands of teenagers face risks of dropping out of school, violence, and a lack of opportunities, the "Teens Ready" program, also known as "Super Batteries Education," emerges as an initiative to transform the lives of young people through comprehensive training and practical tools to help them navigate adulthood.
The initiative, spearheaded by World Vision Honduras in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, was officially launched with the aim of benefiting 25,000 teenagers aged 12 to 17 in the 18 departments of the country.
Unlike a traditional academic program, this initiative aims to support young people in areas that are often overlooked in the classroom: emotional management, entrepreneurship, citizenship, self-esteem, and preparation for the future.
Gerson Raudales, the project coordinator for RISE, explained that the model was specifically designed for teenagers who are going through vulnerable stages and who need to strengthen their personal and social skills. According to his explanation, the program focuses on four main dimensions: health and well-being, entrepreneurial culture, active citizenship, and personal transformation.
"The Teens Ready program is multidimensional and progressive. It seeks to develop skills in teenagers aged 12 to 17 to prepare them for the complex challenges of adulthood," Raudales stated.

The Specialized Court for Sentencing, dedicated to ensuring a life free from violence and discrimination for women in San Salvador, has sentenced Oscar Antonio Alvarado Mancía, 54, to ten years in prison for attempted aggravated femicide against his former partner, a 22-year-old woman. The ruling is based on a legal process that revealed a pattern of abuse, including economic, psychological, and emotional violence.
According to the investigation, Alvarado Mancía was living a double life: he was married but also maintained a relationship with the victim. The young woman entered into the relationship based on promises of marriage and starting a family. However, the relationship became violent when the defendant began demanding grueling work hours from her without providing any financial support. This economic violence, combined with psychological abuse, created a hostile environment for the victim. Faced with this situation, the woman decided to end the relationship after two years.
On May 10, 2025, the victim was walking home when Alvarado Mancía intercepted her on a rural road in the El Refugio settlement, on the road to Jayaque, in La Libertad. Taking advantage of the secluded location, the attacker waited for her, armed with a crowbar. When she arrived, he attacked her while accusing her of ending the relationship and threatening her with death. The victim tried to escape, realizing the danger, but the man…

Gustavo Lovera recently took on the role of General Manager at the iconic W Hotel in Las Condes, just under six months ago. The Argentinian has a career spanning over 30 years in the hospitality industry, starting from the ground up: he began as a bellhop at a hotel in Buenos Aires. With prior management experience in Argentina and Bolivia, he arrived in Chile in 2023 to lead two Marriott hotels: the Courtyard Las Condes and the Santiago Marriott. In December 2025, he assumed leadership of the W Hotel, a luxury brand within the Marriott chain.
"When this hotel opened, 15 or 10 years ago, it was a place everyone wanted to work, regionally speaking. When I was given the opportunity, it felt like a dream come true: to come and be the General Manager of this famous hotel that I so admired (...) The work is very intense, but it has that glamour that is characteristic of the W brand," Lovera recounts in an interview with Pulso. The W Hotel is located at Isidora Goyenechea 3000 and has 196 rooms.
The executive highlights two main challenges he has faced as General Manager of the W Hotel. First, a complex global environment. "The volatility of the markets, the volatility of the world in general, means that the times when one could plan for a certain level of stability are no longer the same. How do I adapt to that? How flexible can I be? How quickly can I learn to understand all the situations? How do I react to a situation, for example, the rise in the price of oil globally, with its impact..."

This Saturday, May 9th, the world celebrates World Migratory Bird Day, a day to recognize the extraordinary journeys undertaken by millions of birds each year. The "fiofío silbón" is one such traveler: a small bird that breeds its young in the Patagonian forests of Argentina and Chile, and travels over 6,000 kilometers north to reach Brazil.
Recently, a team of scientists from Argentina and the United States recorded, for the first time, the bird's journey hour by hour. And what they discovered is surprising: this bird, the size of a sparrow, flies at night for six to eight hours without stopping, and one individual remained in the air for a continuous 28 hours without touching the ground.
The research is the result of a collaboration between researchers from the Esquel Mountain and Patagonian Steppe Research Center (CIEMEP) of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CONICET) and the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco, in Argentina, along with scientists from the University of Indiana, in the United States.
The team consisted of Víctor Cueto, Cristian Gorosito, Geoffrey Brown, and Alex Jahn, who published their study in the Journal of Ornithology, published by Springer Nature.
Why the bird migrates remains a mystery.
Migratory birds of North America and Europe have been under the scrutiny of scientists for decades, but those that travel within South America are much less well-known. The "fiofío silbón" (Elaenia chilensis) is one of them: it spends the winter months away…

Panama faces the challenge of improving its competitiveness to attract more multinational companies, despite already hosting 192 companies under special regimes. This growth reflects the country's potential, but also its structural limitations.
Tony Roldán, president and CEO of the Chamber of Multinational Company Headquarters (CASEM), pointed out that to sustain this dynamism, the country must advance key reforms, such as updating the law on legal stability, streamlining visa processes, and strengthening human capital, especially in the area of English language proficiency.
Roldán emphasized that one of the main challenges is the limitation of legal stability to a period of 10 years, which does not align with the reality of long-term investments.
"Companies don't invest for ten years; they invest continuously," he stated, stressing the need to harmonize Panamanian legislation with international standards to maintain competitiveness compared to other countries.
Law 54 of July 22, 1998, which establishes the legal stability regime for investments in Panama, guarantees to both domestic and foreign investors that, once their project is registered with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, they will not be affected by subsequent changes in the tax, labor, or customs regulations in force at the time of the investment.

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) reported that it conducted an operation against a vessel involved in drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of two suspected drug traffickers. Following the operation, the military command immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard to activate a search and rescue system for any potential survivors.
According to a statement released on social media, the Joint Task Force "Southern Spear," under the command of General Francis L. Donovan, executed a "lethal kinetic strike" against the vessel, which was operated by "designated terrorist organizations."
During the ninth operation in less than a month, two individuals, described by SOUTHCOM as "narcoterrorists," were killed. No injuries or damage were reported among U.S. forces during the mission.
The military command stated that the vessel was navigating along known drug trafficking routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in drug trafficking activities. The vessel's location was determined through intelligence information and was reported to SOUTHCOM, which is responsible for operations and security cooperation in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Washington argues that these operations aim to increase pressure on drug trafficking networks allegedly linked to the Venezuelan regime and formally designated as "terrorist organizations."

As the Bolivia-Chile Women's Group, which brings together academics and representatives of civil society, we have followed the process of rapprochement between our countries and the search for a common agenda. We work under this same paradigm, convinced that integration processes must be equitable and inclusive.
We are interested in the continuation of this effort, particularly in light of the meeting between the foreign ministers, Pérez Mackenna and Aramayo, which focused on integration, investment, and cross-border cooperation, and which resulted in the signing of several bilateral agreements that follow a common roadmap.
We recognize the efforts made in recent years by the authorities of both countries to implement an agenda that builds trust. We highlight the resumption in 2023, after several years of interruption, of the Integration and Border Committee; the Chile-Bolivia Business Council (2023); and the modernization of the ACE22 (January 2026), which includes the elimination of tariffs on certain products and incorporates chapters on trade and gender, as well as a chapter on small businesses and cooperatives, which has served as a starting point for reactivating economic ties and business activity.
Furthermore, given that border security and stability are a shared political priority, agreements were signed in 2023 and 2024 to address vehicle theft and smuggling, to prevent and investigate human trafficking, to improve our migration coordination, and to...

The Attorney General's Office of El Salvador (FGR) announced this Friday that it had ordered the arrest of a woman in the department of Santa Ana for drug trafficking and money laundering offenses. This followed an operation that resulted in the seizure of USD 15,129 in cash, various quantities of drugs, and a scale, as detailed by the institution itself through its official channels. The woman arrested is named Andrea Dessire B.
According to information provided by the Salvadoran Attorney General's Office, the investigation began when residents reported suspicious activity related to the trade of illegal substances in the area. This led to a raid on the suspect's residence, where authorities seized drugs ready for distribution and equipment associated with the illicit trafficking of drugs.
The FGR explained that the detainee will face charges for illegal drug trafficking and money laundering, crimes that carry significant penalties under Salvadoran law. The money seized reinforces suspicions about the existence of illicit financial flows generated by the sale of drugs. Authorities emphasized the importance of citizen reporting and stated that these actions are part of a strategy to dismantle these criminal networks.
The comprehensive strategy of the Salvadoran authorities aims to dismantle criminal networks and disrupt the sources of funding for drug trafficking organizations.

The President of the Republic, Laura Fernández Delgado, began her term on May 8th by signing three key executive decrees during her first cabinet meeting, thereby formalizing the start of her administration, which will extend until 2030. These initial actions, announced at a public ceremony at the National Stadium in San José, aim to mark a turning point in both penal policy and the legislative agenda under state control.
A distinctive feature of this set of decrees is the new prison regulations, which stipulate that "the prison year is 360 days." This reform eliminates the previous system, where the calculation was based on eight months, and, according to Fernández, will "leave no room for interpreting the length of a sentence in fewer days for those who disrupt our peace and steal our security." With this change, judicial authorities will have less discretion to expedite the release of individuals deprived of their liberty. The President justified this measure as a direct response to the growth of organized crime and drug trafficking: "We do not want them in Costa Rica, and I say this again, we do not want organized crime and drug trafficking in Costa Rica," Fernández stated.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly requested that Julio César Morales-Jarquin, a Nicaraguan citizen, not be granted provisional release, considering him a danger to the community's residents.
According to the 15WMTV website, the accused remains in custody in Dane County, Wisconsin, after being implicated in alleged sexual assaults against elderly individuals.
An investigation conducted by the Fitchburg Police Department led to the arrest of Morales-Jarquin in late April 2026.
According to records, the man, who worked at an assisted living facility, faces two counts of second-degree sexual assault against female residents, one of whom suffered from advanced dementia.
The incidents reportedly began in the summer of 2025 and, according to the complaint, continued for several months.
The case has raised concerns among immigration authorities. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer order on April 27, 2026, requesting that local authorities not release Morales-Jarquin and that he be transferred to federal custody.
The DHS confirmed that the accused entered the country in 2023 under the humanitarian parole program for Nicaraguan citizens, although he remained in the United States after the expiration of that benefit.

Men were convicted in Miami federal court for plotting to kill Jovenel Moise at his Port-au-Prince home in 2021
Four south Florida men were convicted on Friday of plotting to kill Haitian president Jovenel Moise in 2021 by hiring mercenaries to assassinate him at his Port-au-Prince home, court records show.
Prosecutors argued during the nine-week trial in a Miami federal court that the men assembled two dozen former Colombian soldiers and supplied them with money, guns, ammunition and tactical vests in a conspiracy to kill Moise. The 53-year-old president was shot dead in July 2021 at his private residence in the hills above Port-au-Prince, a killing that left a gaping political vacuum in the Caribbean nation and emboldened powerful gangs.

SAN JOSÉ. Laura Fernández, a right-wing politician, stated this Friday that she will not "hesitate" to combat drug trafficking, in her inaugural speech as President of Costa Rica.
The 39-year-old political scientist will govern for the next four years after winning the February 1st elections comfortably, largely due to the popularity of her mentor, outgoing President Rodrigo Chaves, whom she appointed as a "super-minister."
"A firm response is what you expect (...). I will not hesitate to confront organized crime," she said, after taking the oath of office at a large event held at the National Stadium in San José.
The political scientist won the elections with a platform that includes radical reforms to the judicial system and security laws.
Last week, Fernández presented Gérald Campos as the new Minister of Security, promising "a relentless war, a total war against organized crime."
Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and has long been recognized as one of the most peaceful nations in the region. However, during Chaves' four-year term, the homicide rate reached record levels.
Among the causes cited by experts in drug trafficking and U.S. authorities is the fact that Costa Rica has become a strategic center for the shipment of South American cocaine destined for the United States and Europe.

Four men from South Florida have been convicted by a U.S. federal court for conspiring against the former President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, who was assassinated in 2021, according to reports from Miami media outlets on Friday.
All four men were linked to a security company based in Miami, known as Counter Terrorism Unit Federal Academy, according to both The Miami Herald and The New York Times.
The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Moïse, 53, was assassinated on July 7, 2021, in an attack carried out in the early morning hours against his residence in a suburb of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. His wife was injured but survived.
His death created a political vacuum in the Caribbean nation and emboldened powerful gangs that operate as de facto authorities in much of the country's capital, Port-au-Prince.
The four men: Antonio "Tony" Intriago, a Venezuelan-American; Arcángel Pretel, born in Colombia; Walter Veintemilla, an Ecuadorian-American; and James Solages, a Haitian-American, were charged in a formal indictment in 2023, which implicated a total of 11 men in a plot to assassinate the president.

Paying for coffee with a mobile phone, splitting a bill through an app, or using a debit card for groceries has ceased to be a novelty and is increasingly becoming integrated into the daily routine of millions of people in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Digital payments are beginning to replace cash, even in areas historically dominated by physical money.
A recent study by Mastercard on digitalization and financial inclusion reveals that 89% of consumers in the region already consider themselves digital users. This change reflects a profound transformation in the management and administration of personal finances, with a sustained advancement of digitalization in everyday activities such as supermarket shopping, dining at restaurants, transportation, and bill payments, according to the report prepared in collaboration with the consulting firm Many Minds Group.
According to the study, 68% of those who do not yet use digital payments consider it "very likely" that they will adopt them in the future, indicating that financial digitalization continues to advance throughout the region.
"Digital participation in Latin America and the Caribbean has reached a new level, and inclusion is no longer just about incorporating people into the financial system, but about ensuring that the system works for them in their daily lives," said Andrea Scerch, President of Mastercard for LAC.

According to sources from the Presidential Palace, officials from the team of the Minister of Deregulation, Federico Sturzenegger, will attend the committee meeting. "We will be there in case it is necessary to clarify any doubts," said representatives from the ministry.
Therefore, while local stakeholders were making contacts within the different political blocs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was engaged in diplomatic negotiations to prevent the agreement from falling through.
In this context, the United States removed Argentina from its "Priority Watch List," a list that identifies countries with concerns regarding intellectual property rights, thus ending a decade-long period of inclusion.
With the intention of issuing a preliminary report—which would happen on the same Tuesday—the ruling party is proposing a key modification to the bill: Argentina's accession to the PCT.

The President of the Council of the Judiciary, Mercedes Caicedo, has requested that the National Justice Court issue a ruling on the legal and administrative scope of the so-called "trust tests" that could be applied to officials within the Judicial Branch, amid institutional efforts to strengthen internal controls in response to allegations of corruption and infiltration by organized crime.
The request was announced on May 7, 2026, by the Council of the Judiciary itself, which stated that it seeks to "guarantee legal certainty" before moving forward with evaluation and control mechanisms within the Ecuadorian judicial system.
Although the institution has not yet detailed the specific tests it intends to implement, the public debate surrounding "trust tests" has included tools such as asset declarations, psychological evaluations, toxicological analyses, background checks, financial reviews, and even the use of polygraphs for certain public officials.
The request comes in a context marked by multiple investigations related to judicial officials suspected of having links to criminal organizations, particularly in cases associated with drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime.
According to the Council of the Judiciary, the objective is for the National Justice Court to clarify aspects such as the constitutional limits of these evaluations, ...

The Labor Modernization Law was fully reinstated this Thursday after the Federal Administrative Litigation Court No. 12 overturned the precautionary measure that had suspended 81 articles of Law No. 27,802, in a ruling signed by Federal Judge Macarena Marra Giménez. The decision came a day after the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, the country's highest court, rejected the appeal filed by the government, which sought for the court to directly intervene in the case.
The Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, celebrated the ruling from the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace): "This is great news for workers and for those who create jobs in the country. The court has just overturned the precautionary measure filed by the CGT (General Confederation of Labor), which had suspended the Labor Modernization Law. In this way, the law that was approved by the National Congress will finally come into effect," he stated.
The ruling of the Federal Administrative Litigation Court No. 12 was based on Article 2 of the Law on Precautionary Measures against the National State (No. 26,854), which obliges the competent judge to proactively rule on the scope and validity of any precautionary measure issued by a court subsequently declared to be without jurisdiction. Judge Marra Giménez determined that the suspension of 81 articles of a law passed by the National Congress exceeded "the narrow scope of the preliminary remedy." The magistrate stated: "To examine this as a precautionary measure...

Rodrigo Chaves will remain in the executive branch of Costa Rica as Minister of the Presidency and Finance after stepping down from the presidency this Friday, in an unprecedented transition that concentrates two of the state's most strategic portfolios in the outgoing former president.
The new leader, Laura Fernández, 39 years old, will assume the presidency on May 8th at the National Stadium in San José, in the presence of delegations from 71 countries, including representatives from Spain (King Felipe VI), Panama (José Raúl Mulino), and Ecuador (Daniel Noboa). The ceremony, originally scheduled for 1:00 PM, was moved two hours earlier to avoid the usual afternoon storms.
Chaves' Legacy and a Cabinet of Continuity
Fernández won the election on February 1st with 48.3% of the vote, the largest margin in 32 years, representing the conservative Partido Pueblo Soberano.
She served as Minister of the Presidency and Planning during Chaves' government, resigned to launch her candidacy, and after winning, returned to the same ministerial position until her inauguration, a situation unprecedented in the country.
The cabinet presented on May 5th at the Melico Salazar Theater made the slogan of continuity a literal reality. Chaves will simultaneously hold the positions of Minister of the Presidency and Minister of Finance, a unique dual role that surprised the opposition, especially because the Constitution prohibits consecutive presidential re-elections.

Coquimbo Unido staged a comeback against Universitario and now has seven points in the Copa Libertadores. This crucial victory for Hernán Caputto's team also triggered internal turmoil within the Lima-based club.
The Peruvian media outlet Todo Sport headlined, "On the brink," following the defeat of the Lima team. The criticism focuses on their position in the standings: "With this result, Coquimbo Unido reached 7 points and shares the lead of Group B with Deportes Tolima, while Universitario remains in third position with 4 points, making their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 more difficult," they stated.
The newspaper Líbero reported the most significant development, revealing that Universitario will be changing its coach after the defeat in Chile. "A drastic measure for Jorge Araujo after losing to Coquimbo in the Libertadores," they headlined.
"Gustavo Peralta used his program 'L1Radio' to reveal that the Velazco administration has decided that Araujo will no longer be the coach of Universitario in the second week of May. This is because the board already has a date set to choose and announce the new coach who will be responsible for leading the team to their fourth consecutive Liga 1 title and qualification for the Libertadores round of 16," they added.
AP Noticias highlighted the psychological blow that the defeat represented for Universitario. "They let slip three valuable points in their visit to Chile, as after taking a 1-0 lead with a goal from Valera, in the second half..."

In the nearly two months that Germán Codina has served as the presidential delegate for the Metropolitan Region, one of his key objectives has been to improve the fan experience at stadiums and promote healthy coexistence between different supporter groups.
"We know that football has experienced difficult and complex times in recent years, and what I am trying to do is align all stakeholders so that we can share a common goal: to restore football for families," he states from his office at Teatinos 220, the same building where the Ministry of Public Security is located.
One of his first declarations of principle was to seek the return of visiting fans to stadiums.
"I believe that in Chile, we have become accustomed to the absence of visiting fans, which normalizes a problem and hides any discussion about its solution. Therefore, I have put forward the idea that we should discuss the possibility of having both visiting and home fans at all matches. I believe it is misleading to think that things are under control simply by preventing visiting fans from attending a venue. What we need to do is re-establish a culture of understanding, of approaching each other, of enjoying the sport, and of understanding that football is often a legacy passed down through generations. It is an effort that is well worth making."

Completing the FIFA World Cup album is a tradition that repeats every four years and attracts a large number of Chilean fans, even though our national team will not be participating in this edition, which will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Opening packets, sticking stickers, trading duplicates, and chasing after elusive rare cards are all part of the experience.
However, in the 2026 edition, the largest in Panini's history, the question is inevitable: How many packets do you need to buy, and how much does it really cost to complete it?
Francisco Poch, Marketing Lead at Panini Mexico, explained all the tricks and secrets of this new edition of the global album in an interview with Bloomberg Línea.
Is it more expensive to complete this album?
The 2026 version features 980 stickers, representing the 48 national teams that will compete in the World Cup. At first glance, it might seem like the most expensive album of all time.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup edition had 670 stickers, but now each packet contains seven stickers instead of the five that were included previously.
"Statistically, and according to a formula we developed, you will need a similar percentage of packets to complete your collection as was required for the Qatar edition," the marketing leader told Bloomberg Línea.
How many packets are needed?
According to Poch, completing the album requires an average of 140 to 150 packets, considering the traditional exchange of duplicate stickers among collectors.

The Costa Rican Social Security Administration (CCSS) has implemented an artificial intelligence tool to optimize the updating and cleaning of waiting lists for outpatient appointments, procedures, and surgeries. This will allow resources to be directed towards those who still require care and free up operational capacity in healthcare centers. The platform, which ensures human validation for each record and complies with the Law for the Protection of Individuals with Respect to the Processing of their Personal Data (Law No. 8968), represents a significant change in patient management by reducing the time it takes to identify cases suitable for removal from weeks to hours.
Between 2023 and the first quarter of 2026, the CCSS addressed 367,403 patients from the surgical waiting list and removed 136,774 cases that no longer required surgical intervention, according to data provided by the Medical Management and documented in the LEQ report for March 2026. During the same period, the ratio of patients operated on to cases removed increased from 2.21 in 2023 to 4.50 in the first quarter of 2026. This increase indicates that more people are now undergoing surgery for each record removed, while the removal rate decreased from 31.2% to 18.2%, demonstrating greater accuracy in the lists and a reduction in outdated records.

The Copa Libertadores provided Coquimbo Unido with a memorable night. This Thursday, they played their second home game, with the opportunity to improve their position in the tightly contested Group B, and, of course, to celebrate at an international level in front of their home crowd. They came back from behind to defeat Universitario de Deportes 2-1.
In Lima, the Chilean champions secured a convincing victory without any major scares. However, the story could have been different. On one hand, Universitario arrived under the interim management of Jorge Araujo, following the departure of Javier Rabanal. On the other hand, as the host team, Coquimbo was expected to take a leading role, starting with greater ball possession. In 2025, they became champions despite having the lowest possession rate in the league.
Hernán Caputto made changes to the attacking lineup. Guido Vadalá was given a starting spot to act as a link between the midfield and Nicolás Johansen. Meanwhile, Benjamín Chandía, who had been playing in the "10" position, moved back to the left wing. Alejandro Azócar was the player who had to make way. The home team demonstrated control of the ball and space from the beginning, against a Universitario side that was defending with a line of five.
While the Chilean champions had control of the game, they struggled to break down the defensive structure put in place by the visitors. "Keep playing from the inside out," Caputto told his players during the first-half hydration break, aiming to open up the field. The clearest chance during that period came from a free kick taken by Juan Cornejo, which was brilliantly saved...

O'Higgins was twice denied the winning goal by the woodwork. The Rancagua team drew 0-0 against Sao Paulo in the fourth round of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana, in a match played at El Teniente. The team, coached by Lucas Bovaglio, was the superior side, especially in the second half. For this reason, the players ended the match with a feeling of disappointment.
The Argentine coach did not hide his disappointment, despite the fact that they still earned a point: "We clearly outperformed our opponent in terms of scoring opportunities. It's a shame because the effort of the players deserved a better reward. The ball just wouldn't go in today; it's a bitter feeling. I even feel it's unfair because we deserved more than what we got," he began by saying at the press conference.
"We hit the woodwork twice, and the goalkeeper made some crucial saves. The truth is, we tried everything, but it just wouldn't go in. I feel that in both matches against this opponent (Sao Paulo), we competed very well, and we can't fault ourselves for anything. This team put up a valiant fight against a powerful opponent," he added.
However, Bovaglio emphasized that it's not all lost and that they will fight for the opportunity to advance from the group stage: "We have two more away games, and the chances are still alive. We will try to play a good match in Uruguay and then play our cards in Bogota. We hope to get the points that we didn't get today."
Another person who agreed with the coach's analysis was Arnaldo Castill...

O'Higgins missed the opportunity to finish as the leader of Group C in the Copa Sudamericana. The team drew 0-0 against Sao Paulo in Rancagua, in a match where they created the clearest chances but failed to score. The team, coached by Lucas Bovaglio, ended up regretting two shots that hit the woodwork.
With this draw, the Chilean team remains in second place in the group with two matches remaining. The Rancagua-based team has one point less than the Brazilian team (eight against seven) and still has a chance to advance to the next round of the continental tournament. They are currently in a playoff position. Millonarios is in third place with five points, and Boston River is in fourth with four. On May 20th, O'Higgins will play in Uruguay.
The match against Sao Paulo started with intensity from the visiting team. In the first minute, Ferreira tried a shot from outside the area, but his attempt went high. The home team responded quickly and tried to establish themselves in the opponent's half through the speed of Francisco González and the runs of Felipe Faúndez, both on the right side.
As the minutes passed, O'Higgins began to control the ball more and approached the goal through crosses into the area. The Chilean team insisted on the flanks and found spaces against a Brazilian defense that retreated several meters. The first half ended goalless, with few interventions from the goalkeepers, although the home team showed more offensive initiative and created several…

Bolivia's President, Rodrigo Paz, strongly condemned the protest methods used by unions affiliated with the Bolivian Workers' Central (COB) this Thursday. This came a day after factory workers occupied the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor in La Paz, and police arrested 13 people, one of whom was released, while 12 remain in custody. "The Ministry of Labor belongs to all of you, and one group considered that they had the freedom to enter and violate a public space of the Bolivian state. I don't believe that can be accepted," the president stated in a press conference.
The occupation took place on Wednesday at noon, when dozens of factory workers from the Confederation of Bolivian Factory Workers stormed the ministry's facilities, located between Yanacocha and Mercado streets in downtown La Paz. From the balconies, they demanded the resignation of Minister Edgar Morales. Union leaders described the action as a "symbolic occupation," although the minister offered a different version: the protesters "forcibly entered, hit the table, took hostages," and prevented officials from leaving the building. Around 2:45 PM, a contingent from the Police Tactical Operations Unit (UTOP) regained control using tear gas and transferred the detainees to the facilities of the Special Anti-Crime Force (FELCC). The Ministry announced criminal charges for kidnapping and trespassing.

Cencosud reported its financial results for the first quarter this Thursday, showing a 30% decrease in profits compared to the same period last year. The company's profits fell from $108.775 billion (US$117 million) to $76.217 billion (US$82 million).
"This was mainly explained by fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and a higher deferred tax liability associated with the hyperinflation adjustment in Argentina," Cencosud explained.
The company's adjusted EBITDA fell by 11.4% during the period, from $376.117 billion (US$406 million) to $333.388 billion (US$360 million).
The company's revenue, linked to the Paulmann family, remained stable, with a slight positive variation of 0.2%, moving from $4.031.583 billion (US$4.347 billion) to $4.041.009 billion (US$4.357 billion). Excluding the international accounting standards that allow for a unified standard for hyperinflationary economies like Argentina, revenue fell by 4.4%.
Performance by Market
When reviewing performance by country, a decline is observed in 4 out of the 6 markets where Cencosud has a presence: Chile (2.4%), Argentina (11.8%), the United States (6.2%), and Brazil (12.4%). Only Peru and Colombia showed growth, with expansions of 6.5% and 8%, respectively.
In Chile, the decline is explained by lower sales in department stores (12.5% less), "mainly impacted by lower tourist activity compared to the first quarter of 2025. The categories..."

The government of El Salvador has submitted a request to the Legislative Assembly to remove five deputies from the San Salvador department and one from the La Libertad department, following the ratification of the constitutional reform that creates district 15, dedicated to Salvadorans residing abroad. The request was approved this Thursday in the legislative session, according to official correspondence.
The proposed reform to the Electoral Code stipulates that the Legislative Assembly will be composed of 60 elected deputies and an equal number of alternate deputies. According to the latest national population census and the new distribution method, San Salvador will decrease from 16 to 11 deputies, and La Libertad will decrease from 7 to 6. This is due to the creation of a new electoral district for Salvadorans living abroad, which will have six deputies.
The electoral districts now include the departments of the country and an additional district for Salvadorans abroad. For a vote to be assigned to the district abroad, it is essential that the national identification document shows a foreign address, or that the right to vote is exercised using a passport, according to the Special Law for the Exercise of Suffrage Abroad.
The new allocation of deputies by department is as follows:
San Salvador: 11 deputies
La Libertad: 6 deputies
Santa Ana: 5 deputies
San Miguel: 5 deputies

Copec, the holding company controlled by the Angelini group, reported earnings of US$272 million in the first quarter, a figure that represented a 30.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the company, this result was mainly due to the positive performance of the energy sector, including liquid fuels, lubricants, and liquefied gas, in its various geographic regions, as well as the mining sector, which contrasted with the larger losses in the forestry subsidiary, Arauco.
In terms of non-operational results, there was an improvement due to more favorable exchange rate differences.
Eduardo Navarro, the general manager of Copec, stated that "the results of this quarter continue to demonstrate the resilience of our portfolio. While the forestry business continues to be affected by a challenging price environment, the performance in the energy and mining divisions is very significant."
In the face of volatility in international markets, Navarro explained that "our focus in energy is on ensuring supply, and in natural resources, on maintaining the most competitive cost structures possible. Furthermore, our financial prudence, our ability to anticipate, and the flexibility we possess allow us to navigate these circumstances."
The forestry subsidiary, Arauco, was primarily affected by lower sales volumes of sawn timber, a decline in cellulose prices, and an increase in…
