The writing from the past decade will be part of a soon to be published memoir that gives a rare and alarming insight into the treatment of Mohammadi, who is in critical condition. It details beatings, constant interrogations, deprivation of medical care and long stretches in solitary confinement during her numerous imprisonments. Continue reading...

It was widely believed that the United States and Israel could militarily defeat Iran, a notion reinforced by the "12-day war" of the previous year, which left Iran without air defenses and with its nuclear program in disarray. However, the problem is that this year, starting on February 28th, the goal was to bring an end to the Islamic Republic (IR), a goal that has not been achieved. Its mere survival is now considered a victory, along with the transformation of the Strait of Hormuz into an international economic crisis. More than any military success on Iran's part – which today lacks both an air force and a navy – it is the automatic mechanism of international maritime insurance that has been at play, halting ships. The mere threat and the firing of shots from a small boat have been enough for insurance companies to immediately halt navigation in those waters. Washington's decision was to block all trade with Iranian ports, seeking a double effect: to bankrupt Iran's economy and to cause its oil wells to collapse due to the inability to sell its oil. In other words, a devastating effect that could be achieved without the need for troops on the ground, forcing Tehran to negotiate. However, this has not yielded the expected results due to the internal divisions between politicians within the regime who are willing to negotiate, and the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), the de facto power today, who have rejected any agreement. In the Middle East, where too many things change, it is difficult to use the term...

Kim Rivers, 48, founder and CEO of the cannabis company Trulieve, will never forget December 18, 2025. The Florida entrepreneur was among the guests in the Oval Office when U.S. President Donald Trump signed the historic order to reclassify marijuana in the United States as a lower-risk drug, moving it from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. The president's order, which recently took effect, does not legalize recreational marijuana nationwide, but it allows companies like Trulieve to operate with far better tax treatment and opens the door to scientific and medical research in an industry valued at more than $30 billion. Political favors and a legal scandal Kim Rivers's husband, John "J.T." Burnette, was sentenced in 2021 to three years in prison and a $1.25 million fine on corruption charges involving bribes to Tallahassee officials and efforts to influence public decisions affecting real estate projects and state regulations. He was also accused of attempting to shape state legislation—including rules related to the cannabis sector—by pushing for regulatory requirements that would benefit certain actors and make it harder for competitors to enter the market. Rivers was neither investigated nor implicated. She received immediate backing from Trulieve's board of directors, which helped her remain insulated from the scandal and preserve her position without damage to her professional reputation.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has achieved what appears less like a reprieve and more like a postponement of the inevitable. Following Thursday's local elections, his Labour Party's position is bleak by almost any historical standard. It lost approximately 1,500 council seats in England, failed to unseat the Scottish National Party in Scotland, and, most symbolically, ceded Wales to Plaid Cymru for the first time in over a century. Meanwhile, far-right politician Nigel Farage's Reform UK continued its advance across Labour's former strongholds, while the Green Party strengthened its hold on younger, progressive voters. Despite the panic in Westminster, there appears to be no immediate move to remove the prime minister. A few members of parliament have publicly questioned his leadership, but Cabinet ministers and backbench organizers have not yet crossed the line from despair to open revolt. Starmer will survive for now because the party, particularly its influential soft-left faction, seems to be waiting for Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham's allies expect him to return to Westminster within months through a by-election triggered by the resignation of a sympathetic Labour MP – a prospect that is already influencing calculations within the party. Burnham's popularity is currently rising, while that of former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is waning, amid concerns that she is less popular with voters. Health Secretary Wes Str…

"The Secretary expressed his appreciation for the alliance with Qatar on a number of issues," said State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott in a statement about the meeting between Rubio and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is also the Foreign Minister of Qatar. The meeting took place as the United States awaits a response from Iran to its peace proposal. "They discussed U.S. support for Qatar's defense, and the importance of close coordination to address threats and promote stability and security throughout the Middle East," the statement noted. The meeting was part of a series of diplomatic efforts aimed at moving towards a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran, in the context of an escalation of low-intensity attacks and ongoing negotiations. The United States and Qatar discussed a one-page memorandum of understanding that would serve as a basis for broader negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in Iran. According to the U.S. State Department, the immediate goal was to establish a cessation of hostilities and lay the groundwork for a lasting peace, although authorities in the Iranian regime have not yet…

Just a few days had passed since "Pet Sounds" arrived in record stores. The dense and emotional music began to emanate from the speakers as it spun on turntables. And it likely took the reviewer for the magazine "Melody Maker," Don Traynor, only a few hours of listening to form a clear opinion of the album. He captured his conclusion in a couple of lines. "Brian Wilson, the leader of the Beach Boys, is a genius, I believe," he wrote in an article published on May 21, 1966. "One must use a very special word to capture the exceptional, astonishing, and blinding talent of this 23-year-old, whose mastery of popular music is absolute." Released on May 16th of that year, "Pet Sounds" was Brian Wilson's response to the creative surge that was beginning to sweep through pop music. The world was changing; influences were crossing from one side of the Atlantic to the other. At that time, Bob Dylan was releasing his seminal "Blonde on Blonde," recorded entirely in Nashville. Meanwhile, the Beatles were immersed in the sonic exploration that they captured on the eclectic "Revolver," and the Byrds were soaring to new heights with "Fifth Dimension," their most ambitious album. And although Wilson had withdrawn from touring with the group to focus solely on songwriting, he couldn't be left behind. A glimpse of his genius can be found in "Today!" (1965), one of the first albums where he attempted to go beyond the typical...

"A meeting in a third country would be possible, but only if a definitive agreement on a peace treaty is reached, which should be designed with a long-term perspective," he said in statements to the press, as reported by the TASS news agency. Putin also stated that, so far, Ukraine has not presented any proposals for a prisoner exchange, as stipulated in the three-day ceasefire agreement reached between the parties and announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. On another note, journalists asked the Russian leader about his decision not to display military equipment during the Victory Day parade, which commemorates the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany. "We decided that we would hold the commemorative events without the display of military equipment, not only for security reasons, but above all because the armed forces must focus their attention on the final defeat of the enemy within the framework of the special military operation," he said, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to a statement released by the ministry on social media, "security services have uncovered an organization linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the Wilayat al-Faqih ideology (a Shia political doctrine)." "Forty-one individuals from the main organization have been arrested, and legal proceedings are being completed against them," the statement on social media said. The arrests were reportedly based on investigations by the Public Prosecutor's Office in cases of "espionage with foreign entities" and "sympathy with Iranian aggression." The latter refers to Iran's retaliatory attacks against several Arab countries, including Bahrain, in response to the attacks launched by the United States and Israel on February 28th.
