Approximately 28 people were affected by the inhalation of a chemical substance in the town of Salamanca, Colón province. The incident was caused by the release of the contents of containers labeled with the name "aluminum phosphide." Initial reports indicate that the containers were found exposed to the elements near some homes in the area. The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) reported that it is awaiting studies to confirm whether the containers actually contained aluminum phosphide. The Ministry of Health reported that most of those affected completed their observation period at the Manuel Amador Guerrero Hospital and were discharged. This chemical is an insecticide used to eliminate insects, such as weevils, that only inhabit dry areas like granaries and silos. It is also used for controlling household pests, although it is not commonly used for this type of activity. This product is subject to restricted use in the country due to its high toxicity and is registered with the Department of Agrochemicals of the National Directorate of Plant Health of the Ministry of Agricultural Development. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies this insecticide as highly dangerous, as its effects from acute overexposure result from inhalation or contact with the product on the skin or eyes. Emmeris Quintero, Director of Plant Health at MIDA, stated that this chemical is sold in stores...

Fátima Giselle Rendón and Débora Medina, the Salvadoran duo, secured their qualification for the Under-18 World Beach Volleyball Championships after defeating Puerto Rico in the NORCECA qualifying tournament held in the Dominican Republic. This result earns them a spot in the premier youth competition in the sport, scheduled for July 8-12 in The Hague, Netherlands. In the women's semifinals of the NORCECA Under-18 qualifying tournament, the teams from the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Canada secured their places in the Under-18 World Championship, according to official information from the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES) and the Salvadoran Volleyball Federation. This advancement represents a significant achievement for Salvadoran beach volleyball, as the Rendón and Medina duo overcame the Puerto Rican team of Ana Barcías and Coralys Pérez in two straight sets, with scores of 24-22 and 21-15. Rendón and Medina had a consistent performance throughout the tournament. They started with straight-forward victories over the teams from Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica, without dropping a set in the group stage. Their performance allowed El Salvador to reach the final stages undefeated, demonstrating the growth of women's beach volleyball in the country within the northern, Central American, and Caribbean region. The next challenge for the duo will be to face the Canadian team of Julia McDougall and Natalia Casas, who also advanced to the semifinals after…

As of the time this report was published, here is the key information available about the shooting that occurred yesterday, Saturday, at the Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. The shooting prompted the Secret Service to evacuate the President of the United States, Donald Trump, his wife, and members of his cabinet. Trump and his entourage were attending the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. Trump stated that the incident will not halt the war in Iran. 1. The alleged shooter has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, according to four officials familiar with the matter, as reported by The Washington Post. 2. Initial investigations by authorities suggest that the alleged shooter appeared to be targeting members of the Trump administration, potentially including the President himself, said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sunday in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press." 3. According to Blanche, the suspect purchased the two firearms he used during the attack "in the past two years." 4. The Chilean government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned "the act of violence that occurred in Washington D.C. during the Annual Dinner of the White House Correspondents Association, where the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, was present." Furthermore, they added that "we express our support and solidarity to the people and government of the United States during this difficult time." "We are convinced that violence must be eradicated from our societies and that it is contrary to the true democratic values that inspire us," the statement concluded. What happened: The President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his wife, Melania Trump, were evacuated from the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night after gunshots were reported inside the Washington Hilton hotel, where the event was taking place. According to the President himself, an armed man managed to enter the premises and fired at a security officer, who was injured but is not in life-threatening condition thanks to the bulletproof vest he was wearing. The attacker was subdued and detained by agents of the Secret Service and is now in the custody of federal authorities. According to the Washington police, the suspect was carrying a shotgun, a pistol, and several knives. Following the shooting, security personnel quickly evacuated Trump, while instructions to "stay down..." could be heard.

Following the news of the attempted attack on Donald Trump on Saturday evening during a dinner with White House correspondents, the Argentine government released an official statement condemning the aggression and praising the immediate arrest of the suspected shooter. Hours later, President Javier Milei began sharing a series of posts in support of his American counterpart, with strong criticism directed at the left. One of the posts that the president reposted in English stated, "They don't kill you for being a fascist. They call you a fascist to kill you," referring to one of the most common comments President Trump receives. Another account on X, which Milei shared, questioned, "How many times did Barack Hussein (referring to former President Obama's middle name) have an assassination attempt? How many times did Joe Biden have an assassination attempt? How many times did Kamala Harris have an assassination attempt? How many times did Hillary Clinton have an assassination attempt? The answer is 0. The Democrats are the party of violence in the United States." "From the left, and funded Harris's campaign. The left will never be able to debate; they have no arguments, no history, no figures, no morality. Everyone condemns them, that's why they are violent and prefer to attack people who think differently," was another of the posts, accompanied by a photograph of Cole Thomas Allen, the suspected shooter.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, the highest authority in the Anglican Church, will be received at the Vatican on Monday by Pope Leo XIV, in the first meeting between the two religious leaders. Mullally, the first woman to hold the position of Archbishop in the Anglican Church's nearly 500-year history, was proclaimed the leader of the worldwide Anglican community – a faith practiced by 97 million people around the world – on March 25th. According to a statement from the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop will meet with the Pope and pray with him as part of a four-day visit, which is being presented as an effort to strengthen ecumenical relations between Anglicanism and Catholicism, two faiths with very few dogmatic differences. In fact, although historically Anglicanism has been viewed by the Catholic Church as part of the Protestant schisms, Anglicans consider themselves part of the Catholic world, separated from it by only a few issues beyond the authority of the Pope (in the case of Anglicanism, it is the British monarch). The meeting comes 60 years after a historic encounter in 1966 between then-Archbishop Michael Ramsey and Pope Paul VI, the first meeting at that level since the creation of the Church of England in the 16th century, when King Henry VIII broke with Rome. Relations have been steadily improving since then, although in 2016, their successors pointed to "new disagreements." However…

The first public trial in Syria against officials linked to the regime of former dictator Bashar al-Assad began in Damascus this Sunday. Atef Najib, a former brigadier general in the Syrian army who served as the head of the Political Security Branch in the southern province of Daraa under Assad's command, and who is also the former president's cousin, appeared before the court to face charges related to "crimes against the Syrian people," according to the state-run news agency SANA. Najib held this position in 2011, when a group of teenagers who had spray-painted graffiti against the government on the wall of a school in Daraa were arrested and tortured. This case became a catalyst for massive protests against the repressive policies of the government's security forces. The authorities responded to the protests with brutal repression, and the marches escalated into a 14-year civil war that ended with Assad's fall in December 2024, following a swift rebel offensive. Assad fled to Russia, while most members of his inner circle also escaped from Syria. Assad and his brother, Maher, the former commander of the 4th Armored Division of the Syrian army – which opposition activists have accused of murders, torture, extortion, and drug trafficking, as well as operating its own detention centers – were charged in absentia, along with other former high-ranking security officials. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has repeatedly urged the court that halted construction on his planned ballroom at the White House to approve the immediate construction of the monumental project, so that incidents like the failed attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner do not happen again, forcing the evacuation of the President, his wife and First Lady Melania, and his entire cabinet present at the event. "This event would never have happened with the military and highly secure ballroom that is currently being built at the White House," the President stated in a message posted on his Truth Social platform. The White House State Ballroom is one of Trump's most desired projects, which he intends to inaugurate before the end of his second term, in 2029, at an estimated cost of between $170 and $350 million, according to estimates from the Trump administration itself, which have varied over time. Trump envisions the structure as a kind of armored reception hall of 8,200 square meters, the cost of which will be borne by the President's patrons, such as the wealthy Adelson family, and major technology companies like Google or Amazon. The problem is that the federal district judge Richard Leon halted its construction again just over a week and a half ago, and accused the administration of attempting to circumvent the rulings he had previously issued against the project. In his ruling, the judge accepted a lawsuit...

Law enforcement are investigating how a suspect got a firearm into the venue where the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held Saturday, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. The suspect — who was taken into custody Saturday night after a shooting that rattled lawmakers, administration officials and reporters — is not cooperating with law enforcement, he said. Neither President Donald Trump nor any other attendees of the dinner were harmed during the shooting, though a Secret Service agent required hospitalization. “We’re still understanding the security protocols that led to him being being able to have firearms in that hotel,” Blanche said Sunday morning during an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Blanche said he expected there would be more information on the suspect’s firearms “in the coming days.” Blanche added that law enforcement believes the suspect was targeting administration officials based on a preliminary assessment, but he did not share further details. Administration officials including Trump and Vice President JD Vance were quickly evacuated from the venue after shots were heard outside the ballroom, and the gala’s planned events were later canceled. Trump initially insisted the show would go on but later said he’d been told by law enforcement the event could not continue as planned. He said the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. As of Sunday morning, law enforcement working the case — including the FBI, U. S. Secret Service and local officials — had executed various search warrants, including on “devices recovered from the suspect,” Blanche said. He said law enforcement was “actively talking to witnesses that knew him” as officials investigated the suspect’s motives. U. S. attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Saturday night that the suspect would be charged in court Monday with assaulting a federal officer using a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a crime of violence. Blanche said Sunday that “there’s a lot of federal charges that could be in play beyond those two charges” pending investigation. The suspect — who has been identified by multiple news outlets as 31-year-old California resident Cole Tomas Allen — took a train from California to Chicago and then a subsequent train from Chicago to Washington, Blanche said. Law enforcement believe the suspect checked into the Washington Hilton — the venue that has for years hosted the annual gala and where a would-be assassin shot former President Ronald Reagan in 1981 — on Friday, Blanche said on CNN. Blanche also said law enforcement understand that the suspect shot a U. S. Secret Service officer who was taken to the hospital in the wake of the shooting, but he could not say whether the officer had yet been released. Trump said Saturday night that the officer was “saved by the fact that he was wearing a obviously a very good bulletproof vest” and was “doing great” as of the president’s last conversation with him. Jeffery Carroll, the interim chief of the Washington police department, said the suspect, who charged a security checkpoint, had “a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives” in his possession. “Look, this isn’t about, in my mind, changing the law or making the laws more restrictive around possession of firearms,” Blanche said. “It appears he purchased these firearms the past couple years. We don’t know how those firearms ended up in his possession in D. C.” Still, the acting attorney general was adamant that Saturday night’s outcome constituted “a massive success story” for law enforcement, although he said law enforcement will make adjustments as necessary. Trump, meanwhile, took to social media Sunday morning to insist that the shooting “would never have happened” at the new White House ballroom he’s constructing in place of the demolished East Wing, adding, “It cannot be built fast enough!” “Nothing should be allowed to interfere with with its construction,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, criticizing a lawsuit which is seeking to halt the project until Trump receives Congressional approval for the $400 million ballroom. A federal appeals court decided earlier this month that work could continue on the site after a lower court judge ordered the administration to pause construction. Oz Pearlman, the mentalist who was slated to perform at Saturday night’s gala, described the experience as chaos in a Sunday morning interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Pearlman — who was performing onstage for Trump, first lady Melania Trump and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt at the time of the shooting — said it was initially unclear whether the president and the first lady had been injured. Pearlman said he initially thought that a bomb was about to explode when law enforcement rushed the stage to evacuate Trump and other officials. “In the room, when there’s commotion of that sort, you tend to think — we’ve been to a lot of events — is this a medical emergency? Is somebody having a heart attack? Because you heard a noise, it wasn’t gunshots. I wasn’t sure if it was a tray,” he told host Dana Bash. Pearlman said he later saw Vance backstage, who “looked very calm” and “was very assuring.”

The plates clattered, the glasses clinked, and at the head of the room, sat President Donald Trump, making his highly anticipated return to the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday. It was just after 8:30 PM, in the basement of the Washington Hilton. The President was on stage, engaged in a conversation with CBS reporter Weijia Jiang; before them stretched thousands of attendees, seated at over 250 tables, as waiters cleared away their salads. Then, loud bangs were heard from the lobby. "I thought it was a tray falling," Trump would later say. For the third time in less than two years, Trump was threatened by gunfire. Hundreds of people, table by table, dropped to the floor; journalists huddled next to Trump officials and other dinner guests, some covered with white linen tablecloths, others pressed against the walls of the ballroom. "Get down, get down!" someone shouted. At the front of the room, Secret Service agents quickly escorted Vice President JD Vance off the stage, and a few seconds later, they did the same with Trump. Other officials in the line of succession, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were also quickly removed. Law enforcement officers were shouting instructions – "Clear the way! Clear the way!" – as they escorted the…

Cole Tomas Allen, 31 years old, has been identified as the suspected perpetrator of the shooting that occurred on Saturday night during a dinner for White House correspondents at the Hilton hotel in Washington. According to CNN, Allen, who faces charges for using a firearm and assaulting a federal agent with a dangerous weapon, worked as a teacher and was an amateur video game developer in Southern California. According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked part-time as an instructor at C2 Education, a company dedicated to academic preparation and tutoring. Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, and recently obtained a master's degree in Computer Science from California State University in Dominguez Hills. In addition to his teaching work, he also dedicated himself to video game development, releasing an independent title called "Bohrdom." The game was launched on the Steam platform, where it is described as an "asymmetric, non-violent, skill-based combat game inspired by a chemistry model with a partial basis in reality." He was also working on a second project tentatively titled "First Law." According to U.S. media reports, Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in October 2024. Following the incident, FBI agents went to a residence linked to Allen...

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, called on Sunday for the immediate commencement of repairs to the protective shield over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Speaking in Kyiv to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1986 disaster, Grossi warned that delays caused by the ongoing war are becoming "problematic" for global safety. "We believe that the repairs should begin as soon as possible, and that leaving the situation as it is now is problematic," Grossi said at a press conference in Kyiv after meeting with Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal. The massive steel structure, designed to prevent the release of radioactive dust from the ruined reactor building, has experienced increased structural stress and maintenance delays since the start of the Russian invasion. Previous estimates from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have put the cost of the necessary repairs at at least 500 million euros (approximately $586 million). The European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jorgensen, who attended the conference of the Ukrainian Energy Coordination Group in the capital, emphasized that the financial burden of the project must be shared internationally. "The cost of repairing the Chernobyl Shelter Fund is not just a burden that Ukraine must bear; it is a collective responsibility that we all must share," Jorgensen said. Millions of people…

The Dominican President, Luis Abinader, described the shooting that took place on Saturday night in Washington, during a dinner hosted by Donald Trump, as a "cowardly" act. Following the incident, he expressed his relief that Trump, the First Lady, and the other attendees were safe. The Dominican president also praised the actions of the Secret Service agents, who were responsible for apprehending the armed attacker. Abinader conveyed the solidarity of the Dominican people with the United States during this time, and offered prayers for the recovery of the officer who was injured during the incident. Through his social media channels, the president emphasized: "The prayers of the Dominican people are with the American people," reiterating his nation's support following the events in the U.S. capital. The annual dinner of the White House Correspondents Association at the Washington Hilton hotel was abruptly interrupted by gunfire, just as the event was beginning. The attendees, mostly journalists and officials dressed in formal attire, were forced to seek shelter under the tables while the Secret Service agents entered the room and evacuated Trump, Melania, and Vice President JD Vance. Armed agents quickly took positions on the stage and blocked the doors, keeping most of those present safe in the area. WASHINGTON.- While the United States was still reeling from the scenes of panic that unfolded last night at a hotel in the capital, where Donald Trump and other top government officials were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Dinner after a man armed with a weapon stormed the event, authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive of the attacker – who has been arrested and identified. Preliminary findings suggest that his target was "officials within the administration." "We are still investigating the motive, and that is something that will necessarily take at least a couple of days," said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche this morning on the "Meet the Press" program on NBC News. Blanche was at the gala at the Hilton Hotel last night. "We believe that the target of this attack – or attempted attack – was officials within the administration, but, once again, this is very preliminary," the official explained. He was one of those who supported Trump last night when the president held a press conference at the White House following the incident, which led to the cancellation of the traditional annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. "The officials he likely intended to target probably include the president, but I prefer to wait and not jump to conclusions on that aspect," Blanche added. In the context of the 40th anniversary of the explosion at the Chernobyl plant, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow on Sunday of "nuclear terrorism" amid the ongoing Russian invasion of the country. The president stated that Moscow, with its attacks, is bringing the world to the brink of a new atomic catastrophe. This follows President Zelenskyy's earlier remarks praising the construction of a sarcophagus over the destroyed reactor, a project involving more than 40 countries, aimed at containing radiation. "These two structures are what protect against radiation leaks and contamination. Their maintenance and protection are for the benefit of everyone. But with its war, Russia is once again bringing the world to the edge of a disaster caused by humans," he asserted. "Forty years ago, the world faced one of the worst nuclear disasters: the explosion of the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A significant amount of radioactive material was released into the environment. Hundreds of thousands of people have been dealing with the consequences of that tragedy for years," Zelenskyy added about the incident. Furthermore, the Ukrainian president pointed out that Russian Shahed drones are constantly flying over the old nuclear power plant, and that one of them crashed into the sarcophagus last year. "The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to achieve this is to force Russia to stop its..."

The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, questioned the United States' commitment to negotiations aimed at ending the war in the Middle East on Sunday, accusing Washington of maintaining a "threatening rhetoric" throughout the process. The president made these statements during a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, to whom he expressed gratitude for his support of the peace talks taking place in Islamabad. According to the Iranian news agency Mehr, Pezeshkian criticized what he described as "continuous violations and coercive behavior" by the United States, both during the negotiations and during the ceasefire period. In this regard, he warned about the potential consequences of an escalation. "A new confrontation would have effects on regional and global stability," he stated. The Iranian leader also pointed to the maritime restrictions imposed on his country and Washington's demands within the framework of the dialogue, noting that these factors have increased doubts about the willingness of the U.S. administration to pursue peace. The criticism comes after President Donald Trump canceled the trip of his envoys to Pakistan, where a new round of talks with Tehran was planned. From Washington, Trump himself has hardened his stance in recent days, setting red lines for advancing the negotiations, including control of the Strait of Hormuz and...

A new study suggests that marital status may be linked to the risk of developing cancer, according to ScienceAlert. The research, published in the journal *Cancer Research Communications*, analyzed millions of cases in the United States and found significant differences between married and unmarried individuals. The study, led by a team from the University of Miami, reviewed over 4 million cancer diagnoses recorded between 2015 and 2022 in 12 states of the country, considering individuals aged 30 years or older. What did the study reveal? According to the results, adults who have never been married have a higher risk of developing this disease: 68% higher in men and 85% higher in women, compared to those who are married or were married in the past. Despite the striking figures, the authors emphasize that this does not mean that marriage prevents cancer. Rather, they point to a series of associated factors that could explain this relationship. Factors such as smoking, stress, and reproductive history influence both the risk of cancer and marital status, which could explain part of the observed relationship. Furthermore, the researchers propose another hypothesis: individuals with better health may be more likely to get married. The conclusions of the findings "This means that, if you are not married, you should pay special attention to the risk factors for cancer and undergo screening tests..."

The origins of this "origin story" can be traced back to the mid-1980s, when genetic sequencing from fossils became possible, first with a quagga (an extinct species of zebra) and later with an Egyptian mummy. These events marked the debut of this powerful tool – significantly enhanced by the invention of PCR, which allowed for the amplification of small amounts of DNA – in the service of the sciences dedicated to understanding how we arrived at our present state. However, a milestone that would dominate this narrative for the following decades occurred in 1997: the sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA of a Neanderthal, based on a specimen found in Germany in 1856. This confirmed that Neanderthals were a distinct lineage from modern humans. This initial step was enriched in 2010, when the Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo (who would later win the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2022) used new genetic sequencing tools to sequence the complete nuclear genome of Neanderthals – not just the mitochondrial DNA – and demonstrated that non-African humans had a certain percentage of hybridization with this extinct species. This expansion of the field proved irresistible to the Spanish biologist and geneticist Lluís Quintana-Murci. Born in Palma de Mallorca and educated in Barcelona, Pavia, and Paris, Quintana-Murci has been the director of the Human Evolutionary Genetics Unit at the Pasteur Institute since 2007. At the author's request, the spelling "Chornóbyl" is used instead of "Chernobyl," following the official transliteration from Ukrainian, which is supported by the institutional use of the term by the United Nations. This Sunday marks the 40th anniversary of one of the largest disasters caused by human action in history: the explosion of reactor No. 4 at the Chornóbyl nuclear power plant. This catastrophe was the result of an experiment conducted on the reactor, ordered by Moscow, in a blatant violation of basic safety protocols. The consequences were devastating. More than 145,000 square kilometers of territory were contaminated with radionuclides, and 8.5 million people were exposed to radiation. The exclusion zone around Chornóbyl still exists today, and its area is comparable to that of Luxembourg. According to some estimates, the most contaminated areas around the plant may not be suitable for safe human habitation for approximately 20,000 years. Chornóbyl was a human tragedy of extraordinary magnitude. On this day, we honor the memory of more than 600,000 heroic workers who risked and sacrificed their lives to save the world from the consequences of the disaster. We are deeply grateful to them. Today, Ukraine has a new generation of heroes in the energy sector who continue to keep the country running under the extreme conditions of the Russian aggression war. Chornóbyl was a verdict against the Soviet system and its crimes...

Attempts to initiate ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran have failed after Tehran's top diplomat left Pakistan, and envoys from President Donald Trump remained distant following his order not to travel to Islamabad. The U.S. president indicated that the ball was now in Iran's court. "If they want to talk, they just have to call!" Trump said in a social media post. The negotiations followed historic face-to-face talks held earlier this month between the United States, led by Vice President JD Vance, and Iran, led by the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. However, Iranian officials questioned how they could trust the United States after U.S. forces began to blockade Iranian ports in response to Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, left Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on Saturday night, according to two Pakistani officials who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Araghchi traveled to Oman, on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz, a country that has previously mediated peace talks. According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, Araghchi announced that he would return to Pakistan on…

A leaked email from the Pentagon, obtained by Reuters, has sparked one of the most significant developments in recent decades regarding the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands. Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon's principal political advisor, wrote to the leadership of the Department of War, outlining various options for punishing NATO allies who did not support Donald Trump in the war with Iran in the way he expected. "The memo includes the option of considering the possibility of reevaluating U.S. diplomatic support for long-standing European imperial possessions, such as the Falkland Islands," the article states. Unexpectedly, the government of Javier Milei experienced a significant shift in the media agenda, which they seized upon with messages advocating for Argentina's claim. The email revealed by the news agency appears to confirm what various high-ranking sources within the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace) and the Ministry of Defense had been quietly asserting for the past year: that the dialogue with the United States involved more than just economic issues, and that it directly impacted geopolitical matters of great interest to the public. It will be interesting to see if this warning issued by this senior advisor is reflected in reality when Donald Trump and the First Lady, Melania Trump, receive King Charles III and Queen Camilla this Monday in Washington, D.C., in what will be a state visit.

On April 26, 1986, at 1:23 AM, an explosion in reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused the largest nuclear disaster in history. In the minutes that followed, a radioactive cloud spread across Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, countries that were then part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Over the course of hours and days, the toxic air mass affected 40% of the European continent. It is estimated that more than five million people were exposed to a level of contamination never before seen. In 2026, forty years later, the international scientific community continues to assess the environmental, health, and social consequences, while the exclusion zone has become a forced laboratory for studying the ecological impact of radioactivity. The explosion released radioactive material 400 times greater than that of Hiroshima and forced the evacuation of more than 135,000 people in Ukraine and Belarus, according to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and the Ukrainian state agency for the management of the exclusion zone. 1. Differentiated effects of radiation: acute and chronic damage In the contaminated areas, the initial radiation came from iodine-131, which has a short half-life. Salary expectations in Panama registered a cumulative decrease of 7.87% during the first quarter of 2026, in a context where the labor market reflects signs of adjustment in workers' expectations. The average desired salary was $984 in March, consolidating a downward trend that has been maintained since January and represents the lowest level recorded for this indicator. The labor market report for March shows that, although January started with an average salary expectation of $1,011, followed by February with $994, the progressive decline led to March closing with a monthly decrease of 0.99% and a year-on-year reduction of 5.21%. This behavior reflects an adjustment in the expectations of job applicants in relation to the current conditions of the labor market. The analysis by experience level shows significant differences. In March, positions of manager or supervisor registered an average salary of $1,303, while semi-senior and senior positions reached $1,017, and the junior segment was at $745. All levels showed decreases compared to the previous month, confirming that the downward trend is widespread in the market. The gender pay gap remains another important element of the report. A tense moment unfolded on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton hotel when the President of the United States, Donald Trump, was urgently evacuated after what were reported to be gunshots during the traditional White House Correspondents' Dinner. The incident, which resulted in no injuries and ended with the arrest of a suspect, inevitably brought to mind a historical precedent: the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan that occurred at the same location more than four decades ago. The age-old dilemma. One of the reasons that makes Koljós such an exceptional novel, among many others, is that it provides valuable insights into the dilemma of Russia. Which dilemma? The perennial one, which has spanned centuries of its history: aligning with the modernizing West—as it seemed possible 20 years ago, when the Kremlin flirted with Europe—or heeding the ancient Slavophile call, which envisions the country entrenched and facing East. What's astonishing is not that these are completely divergent paths. What's astonishing is that this choice repeats itself in Russia time and again. Peter the Great faced it, Catherine the Great faced it, and so did the last Tsars. Later, the Bolshevik revolution extinguished any glimmer of openness. This dilemma also shaped the perspectives of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, who appealed—like saints—to the soul of rural Russia, while Turgenev, on the other hand, from the French Riviera, championed Westernization. More recently, there were years when Putin adopted a European facade, until, with the invasion of Ukraine, he discarded it. The conflict between the two souls of Russia is very present in Carrère's book. His mother, a historian and expert on Russian affairs, always believed that the modernizing faction would prevail, that the country would, in some way, reach democracy. She was certainly wrong. What has happened in recent years is a blatant authoritarian regression, although in this complex situation, no one can be certain of having the final say…
