Norwegian authorities arrested a Chinese citizen on Thursday on suspicion of espionage, related to an alleged attempt to install a receiver intended to collect sensitive satellite data. According to the country's internal intelligence service, security officials conducted searches of two properties, one on the island of Andøya, in the north of the country, where a spaceport is located that participates in expanding European presence in space, and another in Innlandet, in the south of the territory. The Police Security Service (PST) stated that the operation was initiated due to suspicion that a company registered in Norway was operating as a front for a Chinese state entity. The suspect, identified only as a Chinese woman, allegedly attempted to "establish a receiver for downloading satellite data from satellites in polar orbits, capable of collecting data that could harm fundamental Norwegian interests if it were to become known to a foreign state," according to a statement by police lawyer Thomas Blom. Ketil Olsen, CEO of Andøya Space, stated that the company "had no connection with the person involved" and that it detected "no activity related to our operations in this matter." The satellite receiver was seized, and plans to install and operate it have been suspended, according to the police. The incident "involves complicity in a...

A retired Hong Kong police officer and a former official from the UK Border Force were found guilty on Thursday by a London jury of engaging in "covert law enforcement activities" within British territory on behalf of China. The former police commissioner, Bill Yuen, 65, and Peter Wai, 38—both holding dual Chinese and British citizenship—were convicted of assisting a foreign intelligence service, in violation of UK national security laws, following a trial that lasted several weeks. Wai, who worked for the UK Border Force's immigration and customs agency after previously serving in the British police and the Royal Navy, was also found guilty of misconduct in public office. He had searched the Home Office's computer system for individuals of interest to Hong Kong authorities. The jury at London's Old Bailey court, which deliberated for nearly 24 hours, was dismissed after failing to reach a verdict on an additional charge of foreign interference against each defendant. Prosecutors immediately announced that they would not seek a retrial, and the two defendants were remanded in custody pending sentencing, the date of which will be set on May 15th. The court had heard how Wai had gathered intelligence information at the direction of Yuen, who was…

Don’t cook polbo á feira if you don’t know how to do it. Spanish center-right MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara is hosting a traditional Galician dinner Wednesday evening to defend the region’s role as “Europe’s leading fishing power,” the lawmaker told POLITICO in a statement. Invitations were sent after the European Parliament canteen dared to serve what Vázquez called a “fake” version of Galicia’s most iconic dish: boiled octopus with olive oil, paprika and salt, traditionally plated on wood and often served with potatoes. “Everything was wrong with that fake ‘Galician-style octopus.’ Octopus mixed with squid and broccoli — that’s never been eaten in Galicia. That octopus was as Galician as the Parliament building is Renaissance: not at all,” Vázquez said. His dinner’s guest list includes Galician President Alfonso Rueda and Suso Pereira, head of the association of traditional octopus cooks. In an April email to MEPs and assistants seen by POLITICO, Vázquez made clear this is more than a culinary gripe, pointing to Galicia’s fishing sector. “Following the notorious fake polbo á feira that we discovered in the canteen, the time has come to put this sector back in the spotlight,” Vázquez writes. “In the spirit of this sacred mission, I am delighted to invite you to a real Galician feira.” “We promised that in Parliament they would get to know the traditional recipe, and we are delivering,” Vázquez told POLITICO, pointing to plans to scale back fisheries policy. “Galicia is Europe’s leading fishing power, and we cannot stop fighting every battle to ensure it remains so,” he added. It’s not the first food flare-up in EU institutions. The EP canteen has served veggie burgers the day after MEPs voted to ban them, and on another occasion, employees at the European Central Bank railed against a sharp drop in the quality of the olive oil being served with lunchtime salads.

The European Commission said it will “keep our options open” as the EU considers U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on automobiles and auto parts from Europe, raising the prospect of a transatlantic trade war. Trump announced Friday night on Truth Social that he would increase the tariff on cars and trucks from the current 15 percent in response to the EU “not complying” with the trade deal reached by the two sides in Scotland last summer. In response, a spokesperson for the European Commission said the bloc was implementing the Scotland deal “in line with standard legislative practice, keeping the U.S. administration fully informed throughout.” The chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, meanwhile, called Trump’s tariff threat “unacceptable” and accused the U.S. of “breaking its commitments.” There have been simmering tensions between the two sides over the implementation of the Scotland deal. From Taiwan to Tibet, French President Emmanuel Macron has touched Beijing’s nerves on a range of sensitive issues over the past few weeks. On a trip to Japan earlier this month, he and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi “emphasised the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and urged a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through constructive dialogue”. The irritation for Beijing was less about the language and more about the timing, with the joint statement coming...

A turret explosion that killed three Japanese crew members inside a Type 10 tank during manoeuvres earlier this week has caused shock and confusion in military circles. Japan’s defence ministry and experts concur that a round detonating inside a tank turret is virtually unheard of and the cause of the accident will need to be traced before the Ground Self-Defence Force’s (GSDF) newest and most advanced tank can return to training. An analyst suggests the investigation will look closely at...

The discovery of hundreds of toxic mothballs on St. Pete Beach triggered an official investigation in Florida, posing a direct threat to a protected bird colony and necessitating an urgent cleanup operation. The incident, detected on April 20, 2026, in a coastal area approximately 48 kilometers southwest of Tampa, mobilized the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), volunteers, and environmental organizations such as Audubon Florida and the Coastal Wildlife Advocacy Group. The presence of these banned pesticides in the open air has raised concerns about the safety of wildlife and visitors, as detailed by USA Today and confirmed by state authorities. The FWC explained that the use of mothballs outdoors violates state and federal laws, as these products contain toxic compounds such as naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene, which can severely harm birds, pets, and people. The official investigation is focused on determining whether the dispersal of the pesticides was intentional and whether it was aimed at preventing the nesting of the black skimmer, a threatened species in the region. According to a report by Axios Tampa Bay, the placement of new mothballs after an initial cleanup reinforces the hypothesis of a deliberate action. St. Pete Beach is an ecologically important area due to the seasonal presence of black skimmer colonies, a species protected by Florida law. The intervention…

Belgium is loosening closing-time rules for its stores, to give them a fighting chance against online retailers. The federal government announced Friday it formally scrapped the requirement for shops to close for a mandatory 24-hour period each week. It also relaxed closing-time rules, allowing shops to stay open until 9 p.m. every day. Previously, shops had to close at 8 p.m. on most days. The changes to physical merchants’ opening hours were announced last summer to help them compete with online vendors. “The current law is no longer adapted to the expectations of consumers and retailers, nor to the development of e-commerce, which is much more flexible than physical stores, causing distortions of competition,” Eléonore Simonet, Belgium’s minister for small businesses, the self-employed and SMEs, said in a statement in July 2025. “More flexibility should ensure that retailers can adapt to current expectations,” she added. While large retailers have welcomed the increased flexibility, employees have raised concerns. Earlier this week, workers at Aldi, one of Belgium’s largest supermarket chains, went on strike after the company told unions it would start exploring the option of opening branches on Sundays. Smaller and self-employed retailers fear the measures will put pressure on them, as larger companies will find it easier to adapt. The Neutral Union for the Self-Employed (NSZ) has argued that the reforms will lead to higher operating costs without increasing income. Since July 2025, the legislation has undergone a formal consultation procedure before being approved by the Council of Ministers on Friday. The law, which forms part of the current government’s coalition agreement, must now be approved by the Belgian parliament and is expected to enter into force later this summer.

Taiwanese analysts have broadly welcomed a new US Navy plan to deploy thousands of uncrewed surface vessels across the Indo-Pacific by 2030, saying it could complicate Beijing’s military planning and strengthen deterrence. But they also warned that unless Taipei pressed ahead with its own stalled drone fleet ambitions, the approach might offer Taiwan only limited direct benefit, given Washington’s production, logistics and surveillance challenges. The assessments follow remarks this week by...
