Universidad Católica needed to defeat Ñublense to remain in contention for the Copa de la Liga, one of the season's objectives (the prize is to be the third Chilean team to qualify for the 2027 Libertadores). At the Claro Arena, the "cruzados" (Catholics) disappointed. They were held to a 1-1 draw in the final minute and are no longer solely in control of their own fate regarding qualification.
The "Diablos Rojos" (Red Devils) arrived at San Carlos de Apoquindo as leaders of Group B. A victory in the foothills of the Andes would have secured their immediate qualification to the semifinals. Therefore, the pressure was primarily on the home team. In that sense, Daniel Garnero made very few changes. Nine of the starting players were the same as in the draw against Cruzeiro last Wednesday. The only changes were in goal (Darío Melo replacing Bernedo) and in midfield (Matías Palavecino replacing Mena, which meant Cuevas moved to left back).
In the first half, both teams would end up with players sent off, but the game largely favored Universidad Católica. However, this didn't mean they had a clear advantage over the visitors. When they had possession, it was difficult to find space against the tight defense of Ñublense, which formed a line of five when defending.
Palavecino, who would later become a controversial figure, had to retreat to the level of Jhojan Valencia to receive the ball and try to create passes. In Garnero's 4-1-4-1 formation, the Argentine number 10 played as an inside forward, but was too far from Zampedri to act as a direct link. On the right, Clemente Montes created some danger...

In response to concerns raised by some local authorities, academics, and urban planners regarding the proposed amendments to the General Urban Planning and Construction Ordinance presented by the government, I invite everyone to engage in an honest and open discussion: If urban planning in Chile is already too slow in times of peace, then that pace becomes critical in times of urgency.
The urban economist at Harvard, Edward Glaeser, has demonstrated that current zoning systems and restrictive regulations, such as those in Chile, function as a "tax" that artificially inflates housing prices, disproportionately affecting young people, seniors, and low-income individuals who lack access to credit.
The government's proposal is not a deregulation or a neoliberal foundational reform, as some claim, but rather a pragmatic and risky effort to reactivate the economy. Furthermore, it aims to expand the supply of housing in terms of size, format, and affordable locations, recognizing demographic changes and investments in public transportation. The controversial change from a density of 4 residents per household to 2 residents per household does not mean that the number of people in a neighborhood will double; it refers to the same number of people defined in the zoning plan, but in smaller dwellings that are more in line with demographic realities. Today, 1/5 of households in Chile are single-person households, and yet we continue to demand housing for four people and social housing units of over 55 square meters.

The match between Universidad Católica and Ñublense, which is part of the fifth round of Group B in the Copa de la Liga, has a lot at stake. If Universidad Católica wins, they will tie with Ñublense in points, leaving everything open for the final round. Conversely, if Ñublense wins, they will mathematically eliminate Universidad Católica from contention for qualification.
Due to the importance of this match, the players from both teams are engaged in a tense and competitive game. In fact, both Universidad Católica and Ñublense have had players sent off due to excessive force.
The first team to have a player sent off was the visiting team, Ñublense. Diego Céspedes received two yellow cards and had to leave the field after just 27 minutes. Shortly after, Justo Giani scored a goal, taking advantage of the numerical superiority.
However, Universidad Católica also lost a player. In a dispute for the ball, Matías Palavecino accused Jovanny Campusano of striking him. However, the Universidad Católica player then delivered a forceful shove in an attempt to exaggerate the action, and after a review by the VAR, he was sent off. This is his second expulsion in this tournament; the first occurred in the first round against Universidad de Concepción.

The University of Chile suffered a heavy defeat in their away match against Unión La Calera, jeopardizing their chances in the Copa de la Liga. The "blues" lost by a narrow margin after a lackluster performance and are now relying on a miracle to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
After the defeat, coach Fernando Gago analyzed the match and explained his team's poor performance, which struggled against the "cementeros" and only managed to create scoring opportunities towards the end of the game.
"I think we lost individual battles, and that led to a match that we knew could happen, with many transition situations. But, I think we need to approach these matches in the same way, continue to push forward, and try to create clearer chances in front of the opponent's goal," he began, speaking on TNT Sports.
"These weren't errors on the collective or individual level. They were more situations of individual battles, where we lost possession and that led to those transitions. We knew it would be a match like this," he continued.
Gago also criticized the referee, Cristián Garay, and the constant stoppages in play: "There was no real game. The referee allowed it not to be a game. Then we complain about the amount of added time. Obviously, each team has its strategies and works on them, but we need to keep pushing," he said. "There was no game," he insisted, referring to the eight minutes of added time.
Finally, he assured that they will continue to fight for qualification, despite the setback.

Following a turbulent week marked by a police raid on the club's headquarters, the University of Chile team also failed to find stability on the field. They lost their away match against Unión La Calera by a narrow margin, losing their first opportunity to advance to the semifinals of the Copa de la Liga in Group D. The team, which put in a lackluster performance, is now relying on a miracle to reach the semifinals.
Unión La Calera moved to the top of the table, tied with Audax Italiano (both with ten points), who will face the University of Chile (who have seven points). The University of Chile needs to win and hope that a strong team from La Calera doesn't earn any points against Deportes La Serena, which is already eliminated, as the goal difference favors them in case of a tie in points.
Hoping for a miracle
Gago had to make changes to the starting lineup for the match. Injuries to Nicolás Ramírez and Fabián Hormazábal led to the inclusion of Franco Calderón and Nicolás Fernández. Meanwhile, Charles Aránguiz returned to the starting lineup, replacing the young Lucas Barrera, who had been performing well as a key player for the team. Additionally, the coach made a bold decision by leaving Javier Altamirano out of the squad, a player who had a disappointing year. This was purely a football-related decision.
The University of Chile continued to press high, a tactic that had worked in previous matches, although La Calera was not afraid to try and play their game from the back. When the team from La Calera managed to break through that pressure, they troubled the University of Chile by launching quick counter-attacks. The transitions…

The National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) reported "highly positive" results following an inspection carried out in the La Araucanía region to evaluate forest restoration processes linked to international environmental protection commitments.
The inspection took place on the Llancalil property, in the municipality of Pucón, where measures implemented by the company Servicio de Compensación de Emisiones S. A. were reviewed. These measures are associated with the export of *Araucaria araucana* specimens grown in nurseries in the Metropolitan Region.
According to Conaf, the inspection confirmed a survival rate of nearly 100% in the reforestation of *Araucaria araucana* trees, a result that the institution highlighted due to the protected and iconic status of the species.
The review is part of the fulfillment of commitments associated with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), an international regulation that governs the trade of protected species to ensure their traceability and legality.
In this context, Conaf acts as the administrative authority in Chile for terrestrial flora, supervising exports, verifying the legal origin of specimens, and monitoring compliance with regulations in conjunction with other government agencies.
The institution stated that this type of process aims to reconcile productive activities with the conservation of native species and the protection of ecosystems.

It has been a turbulent few weeks at the University of Chile. Amidst preparations for Fernando Gago's team to compete in the Copa de la Liga, the secular club was subjected to a complex police raid at the Centro Deportivo Azul.
Despite being preliminary investigative procedures, the incident left its mark. Cecilia Pérez, the president of Azul Azul, addressed the concerns raised ahead of the match against Unión La Calera in the aforementioned domestic competition. "It was a complex week outside of sports. In terms of sports, the team, the coaching staff, and the management led by Manuel (Mayo) are clear that they need to keep everything separate in order to focus on what they need to do. We need to face each match and hope for the best," she began.
"Otherwise, it has been challenging. The seizure of documents and digital data was undoubtedly unpleasant. I spent the entire day with our staff because this is not something that happens regularly. With the same transparency, I want to say that the entire institution actively cooperated with the judicial order, the prosecutor in charge, and all the officers from the investigative police. We are reassured that, from the University of Chile's perspective, we are not involved in any of the legal proceedings. We were caught in the crossfire. Everything related to the club has been handled correctly, respecting all the laws," she added.

The influenza vaccination coverage exceeded 60%, but to date, more than 600,000 children have not received the vaccine.
On Thursday, May 7th, the weekly report for the 2026 Winter Campaign from the Ministry of Health (Minsal) was released, covering epidemiological week 17, from April 26th to May 2nd. The information was presented by Jorge Vilches, head of Epidemiology, and Valentina Pino, campaign coordinator.
The results indicate that, with 6,595,720 doses administered, the influenza vaccination coverage reached 63.9%. Within this group, healthcare workers have the highest vaccination rate, exceeding 80%.
Conversely, the groups with the lowest vaccination rates are children aged six months to five years—over 600,000 of whom have not been vaccinated—pregnant women, and people over 60 years old.
"When we identify the target population of children between 6 months and 5 years, we are talking about approximately 1.3 million people. Of this group, 620,000 have not yet received their vaccine and are not protected during the 2026 Winter Campaign. Therefore, we are calling on the adults who are responsible for these children to take them to the various vaccination centers so that they can be protected and immunized against this virus when its circulation increases," warned Jorge Vilches, head of Epidemiology at the Minsal.

It was this Saturday morning that the derailment of a freight train, involving nine cars, was reported. The company stated that the incident occurred shortly after 5:00 AM, when the train carrying cellulose to a regional port went off the tracks.
No one was injured in the incident, but the Santa Sofía railway crossing was blocked, and a special operating schedule was implemented for rail services.
In addition to the above, EFE Sur confirmed in the afternoon that the cranes responsible for removing the affected cars were already on site to begin assembly. It is projected that the removal of the cars will continue until this Sunday.
"Once that task is completed, EFE's infrastructure teams will be able to begin the work of repairing the damaged tracks," the statement added.

Specifically, the officers managed to seize a truck traveling along Route 5, loaded with bags of cement that concealed 976 kilograms of processed marijuana, ready for sale.
The operation was carried out through coordinated investigative work by specialized Carabineros from the Department of Drugs 0S7 and the La Herradura precinct. The process also involved the participation of drug-sniffing dogs Spot and Franco, who confirmed the presence of the substances.
Finally, the operation culminated in the discovery of narcotics equivalent to nearly two million doses. The extraction process was carried out with the support of a crane to unload the bags that appeared to contain construction materials. Inside these bags, 33 rectangular containers were found, each containing at least nine smaller containers.

Just under a month before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the National Customs Service is proactively addressing the potential for counterfeit products through theoretical and practical training.
With a focus on anticipating a possible increase in the influx of fraudulent goods associated with global sporting events, Customs is concentrating on strengthening its inspection capabilities related to intellectual property.
This is being achieved through training sessions for officials who perform inspection and review duties at border crossings, particularly for Customs officials in Valparaíso, San Antonio, and the Metropolitan area.
"We are committed to ensuring that inspectors have the knowledge to detect goods that may be counterfeit in the context of a global event, establishing a proactive preparation path for their work," emphasized Patricio González, head of the Department of Inspection and Control of Illicit Traffics.
This is being accomplished through a specialized workshop, led by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), along with representatives from the sportswear brands Puma and Nike. The Administrator of the Autonomous Pension Protection Fund has initiated the public bidding process for the management of the fund's investment portfolios.
Specifically, two mandates are being offered: one for short-term National Fixed Income and another for long-term National Fixed Income, and these may be awarded to one or multiple administrators.
"This bidding process is a significant milestone in the implementation of the Autonomous Pension Protection Fund and its Administrator. The objective of this process is to select outstanding asset managers for the administration of assets, through a competitive, transparent, and high-standard institutional process. This aims to maximize returns with appropriate levels of risk for the fund, always considering the financial sustainability needed to finance the benefits of the Social Security Pension system in the long term," stated the executive director of the organization, Sergio Soto.

In a new episode of the Hub Sustentabilidad program on Radio Duna, an analysis was presented of the Clark Hill international legal study, which posits that 2026 is a year of "recalibration" for global corporate sustainability. The pressure is no longer on making declarations, but on demonstrating with data that commitments are being met.
The first challenge, explained the program's editor, Bárbara Pezoa, is the mandatory climate reporting, which has ceased to be voluntary in major markets and creates a ripple effect on exporters and their suppliers. The second is greenwashing, with increased legal scrutiny of what companies communicate. The third focuses on the supply chain and human rights, with European regulations requiring traceability even in developing countries. The fourth is the circular economy, which has become a legal requirement for selling in certain markets. And the fifth is the use of artificial intelligence in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, which is useful for measuring and reporting, but raises questions about the quality and auditability of the information.
These new standards, which provide concrete examples of regulatory changes in various countries, demonstrate how sustainability is now viewed as a risk management strategy, a means of accessing markets, and a factor in operational viability.
Sustainability in Practice
This global framework then led to a concrete example of how corporate sustainability can translate into local action. Following the fires...

The notary, Valeria Ronchera, is facing a complex public and legal situation after being accused of a multimillion-dollar fraud in Zapallar, in the Valparaíso region. This accusation stems from the irregular transfer of a property valued at $1.6 billion.
The case came to light when lawyer Luis Alberto Aninat discovered that he and his wife had been impersonated in the sale of the land, which covers three thousand square meters. The transaction was carried out using forged documents at the 10th Notary Office of Santiago, headed by lawyer Ronchera.
In light of this situation, Aninat requested the Santiago Court of Appeals to remove the notary's official witness, arguing a possible deliberate act on her part, which is a crime under the Penal Code. However, Ronchera's legal situation has taken on a new problem.
Last Wednesday, May 6th, real estate entrepreneur Mauricio Truan Alonso filed a lawsuit with the 12th Civil Court of Santiago, requesting that the notary be declared bankrupt.
"I am filing this request based on an outstanding debt for a debt acknowledgment that has not been paid by the defendant, which amounts to $418 million," the document, which Pulso had access to, states.

An investigation led by the Iquique Prosecutor's Office, in collaboration with the OS-9 unit of the Carabineros (Chilean police), resulted in the arrest of a man identified as Sebastián E. P. U., who is suspected of being the perpetrator of various crimes, including sexual abuse of minors and the production of sexually exploitative material. These crimes allegedly affected minors in the regional capital of Tarapacá, as well as in other cities such as Antofagasta, La Serena, Concepción, and Temuco.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspect's modus operandi involved contacting adult women through dating platforms, using both his real name and the alias "Michael Hidalgo." He would inquire whether they had daughters or young girls in their care. Once he arranged meetings, he would take advantage of the opportunity to abuse the minors and record these acts.
The prosecutor in charge of sexual crimes, Camila Albarracín, explained that a key witness's report and the provision of audiovisual files recovered from the suspect's cell phone allowed investigators to confirm the existence of a large amount of sexually explicit material. This material includes at least three girls, aged between 3 and 5 years old, who were victims of sexual abuse. These videos and photographs were allegedly produced by the suspect between 2019 and 2023 and stored on his mobile device.
During the investigation, it was also determined that the suspect was already facing charges for the crime of rape against a woman in October...

Matías Zaldivia breaks his silence at the University of Chile. The defender spoke ahead of the university team's match against Unión La Calera in the fourth round of the Copa de la Liga, addressing the raid that took place this week at the Centro Deportivo Azul (CDA).
"I found out through social media because we had a day off," the defender said about the procedure carried out on Monday at the CDA, as part of an investigation involving the former president of the concession company, Michael Clark, related to the "Caso Sartor."
The center-back stated that the players are staying out of the issue and that the legal problems have not disrupted the team's daily routine. "Internally, as far as we, the players, are concerned, nothing has changed. There's a lot of noise outside, but we are detached from that situation," he said.
Zaldivia also avoided going into detail about the case and pointed out that other departments within the University of Chile should address the issue. "There are people at the club who should handle this, they should answer the questions," he indicated.
On the football front, the University of Chile is preparing to visit La Calera this Sunday. Fernando Gago's team is coming off a 5-0 victory against Deportes La Serena and is looking to maintain its position in the race to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. "We know that it is very important because being in the Libertadores would be a great thing, in addition to giving you a title. It is one of our objectives," Zaldivia said.

The organization operated a clandestine laboratory in the Metropolitan Region to supply various distribution points in the Los Ríos Region.
The investigation was conducted by the OS7 unit of the Carabineros in Valdivia, in coordination with the SAC-ECOH prosecutor's office in Los Ríos. The investigation revealed the structure's operations and identified the property used for the production of illicit substances. Based on this information, the police carried out an anti-drug operation in Quilicura, Metropolitan Region, with the support of the GOPE special operations unit and local personnel. This operation resulted in the seizure of the property under investigation and the arrest of five Colombian nationals linked to the organization.

Catholic University and Cruzeiro drew 0-0 at the Claro Arena, leaving Catholic University as the leaders of Group D in the Copa Libertadores. After the match, Lucas Romero, captain of the Brazilian team, made a harsh critique.
First, the midfielder acknowledged that his team had salvaged a point after playing almost the entire game with one player less. However, he also questioned the referee's decision regarding the expulsion of Keny Arroyo, and made a comment about the condition of the pitch.
"From the very beginning, we went out to seek victory. We needed those three points, but we knew we were facing a great rival. In addition, we had the difficulty of the rain; the pitch wasn't in the best condition, and then we were reduced to ten players at the start of the second half," Romero began, speaking in the mixed zone.
Regarding Arroyo's red card, he was blunt: "In my opinion, he was wrongly sent off. It was a bad decision by the referee, and also by the VAR for not correcting it. We were told that if you step on an opponent's foot, it's a yellow card, not a red card. So, I feel that the referee made a mistake," the Argentine added.
Romero referred to the heavy rain that affected the condition of the pitch at the Claro Arena: "Due to the material used on the pitch, at times it seemed like it was waterlogged. The ball was stopping, not rolling well, but this situation was the same for both Catholic University and us," he said.

Rain and thunderstorms were reported yesterday in the central zone and Metropolitan Region. This was due to the arrival of a frontal system combined with an atmospheric river, which brought the first significant rainfall of autumn to the area.
This weather event persisted until the early hours of Thursday, May 7th, in various areas. However, the most important question is whether the rain will continue throughout the day.
According to the forecast from the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC), it will be a cold day, with expected maximum temperatures of 15°C.
Forecast: Will it rain today in Santiago?
The Meteochile forecast only shows rain during the early hours of Thursday, May 7th, in the Metropolitan Region. For the rest of the day, no precipitation is predicted in any area, nor for the coming days.
The same scenario is expected for the Valparaíso and O'Higgins regions, while in the Maule and Ñuble regions, the effects of the frontal system will have ended by Wednesday evening (there will be no rain at dawn).

The resignation of 20 government delegates in various regional ministerial secretariats (Seremi) across Chile's 16 regions within a two-month period has shaken the administration of President José Antonio Kast.
The latest resignation, registered on Wednesday, was that of Camila Alonso, the regional ministerial secretary for the National Assets portfolio in Antofagasta, who, like others, cited "personal reasons."
Opposition lawmaker Jaime Araya questioned the functioning of the team of advisors closest to the president, known as the "Second Tier."
"The disorder and lack of coordination caused by the Second Tier, with its million-dollar salaries paid from public funds, is unacceptable. They should be dismissed for being irresponsible, arrogant, and useless, for hindering the administration," he stated.
The comment refers to the verbal clash that occurred days earlier between spokespersons and representatives of the ruling parties and the group of advisors in the Second Tier. According to local media, both power centers failed to coordinate their work in favor of the government and reflect design flaws in the management structure.
The recent resignations include cases such as those of the Seremi of Culture in Aysén and the Metropolitan Region, who served for only one day in their positions. Also included are the heads of Labor and Social Security and Health in Valparaíso; of Education in Biobío; of Public Works in Los Ríos; of Energy in Los Lagos...

Artur Jorge, the coach of Cruzeiro, left the Claro Arena with mixed feelings. While he appreciated the draw against the team, he also complained about the officiating by Colombian referee Andrés Rojas.
After the Group D match in the Copa Libertadores, the Portuguese coach highlighted the strength of his players, especially in the final minutes, particularly after playing almost a half with one player less.
"When we can't win, we have to do everything possible to avoid losing. The team acted according to that principle. In the second half, the players acted rationally, with the desire to secure an important point in such a balanced group," he commented.
Despite this, the coach warned that "the red card completely changed the game compared to what we did in the first half, when we dominated possession of the ball. With one player less in the second half, it became much more difficult to try and reach the opponent's goal. However, I commend the bravery of my team in defense and also their attempts to score and win the match. That was our main objective here. Given the circumstances, it was very important not to lose."
Despite being numerically disadvantaged for almost the entire second half, the Portuguese coach emphasized that his players never gave up on securing at least a point from Santiago.
"It is always very difficult to play with one player less. It becomes complicated to find the balance, especially..."

Dear Editor,
During May, we in Valdivia commemorate the anniversary of the 1960 earthquake, the largest ever recorded, which submerged and forever transformed a significant portion of the city. It has been 66 years of adapting to a new landscape characterized by wetlands. This change has presented significant challenges regarding land management, and we cannot afford to ignore them. The need for housing is high, but it cannot justify construction on these ecosystems, as that would be completely contrary to technical principles and would inevitably lead to the deterioration of buildings and the quality of life for residents.
We cannot ignore the climatic and environmental context. We must understand that wetlands provide a valuable service to the community in terms of resilience and adaptation. Without them, we would constantly be flooded by the approximately 1,500 millimeters of rain we receive each year, and we would be far from achieving what we have always strived to be: a river destination, surrounded by nature for those who visit us and for our own community. Wetlands are an integral part of our sustainable development, something that fills us with pride, and they are not an obstacle.
The positive relationship between wetlands and the community is clear. In addition to mitigating high levels of precipitation concentrated in a short period, they serve as places of contemplation in the heart of the neighborhoods, which are essential for the mental well-being of all who live in this beautiful…

The weather front that moved from the south towards the central region of the country on Wednesday left a preliminary impact characterized by varying levels of precipitation in the Metropolitan Region, limited damage to infrastructure, and more complex situations in the south, particularly in the Los Lagos Region. Throughout the day, authorities intensified monitoring of critical areas and activated preventative plans, while power outages were reported, affecting nearly 47,000 customers nationwide.
In Santiago, the rain began to intensify in the afternoon, although the accumulation was uneven. While stations in the eastern sector, such as Tobalaba, recorded 18 mm, Quinta Normal reported only 0.9 mm. In western areas, Melipilla reached 23.1 mm, consistent with the forecasts from authorities, who anticipated amounts between 10 and 30 mm in those sectors. On the coast, Valparaíso accumulated 22.2 mm.
The governor of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego, warned of the start of the event from midday, with precipitation in municipalities such as Melipilla, Alhué, María Pinto, and Talagante, projecting up to 30 mm in the valley and 35 mm in the foothills. In addition, the freezing level was around 2,500 meters, a condition that increases the risk of landslides in areas near the mountains. The measure was supported by 42 senators present at the time of voting on the presidential proposal, which maintains the deployment in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta.

Cenco Malls, the shopping center subsidiary of Cencosud, experienced an increase in its profits during the first quarter of the year. The company increased its earnings by 55%, from $60.429 billion (US$65 million) in 2025 to $93.406 billion (US$100 million).
The chain's revenue increased by almost 5% during the period, rising from $90.273 billion (US$97 million) to $94.592 billion (US$102 million) between January and March of 2026. Peru and Colombia were the main drivers of this growth, with increases of 18% and 12% respectively, while Chile only grew by 4.4%.
Cenco Malls explained that this revenue growth was "due to the increase in fixed rent, mainly supported by the incorporation and commercialization of spaces delivered during the last year in the three countries where the company operates, along with increased office occupancy in the Gran Torre Costanera. Variable rent showed a smaller contribution, reflecting mainly lower spending by foreign tourists and a high base of comparison in Chile."
The Gross Leasable Area (GLA) increased by 5.9%, equivalent to over 80,000 square meters. In the office towers, the company managed to incorporate 25,000 square meters in one year, resulting in a 37.4% increase in revenue, despite a decrease in occupancy from 91.4% to 82.6%.

This occurred during his presentation, in which he discussed the details of the final report No. 421 from the Comptroller's Office, which reviews the conditions under which the Ministry of Housing (Minvu) acquired land as part of the Housing Emergency Plan (PEH) during the period 2022-2026.
As he did during his presentation before the same committee in the Senate, the former minister emphasized that the report, in none of its 149 pages, indicates that there were purchases of land at inflated prices.
Despite this, during the question-and-answer period, Deputy Paz Charpentier (from the Republican party) directly asked Montes what reasons there would be not to file a constitutional accusation against him.
"I believe that the deputy is essentially outlining the charges for a constitutional accusation. I believe that no constitutional accusation has been filed here," the former minister emphasized.
"Anyone has the power to file constitutional accusations. I was a member of parliament for a long time. What happens is that you know what that means. Constitutional accusation battles have done a lot of damage to the Parliament, and we hope to address the main issues," he added.

After 1:30 PM, when the session of the Chamber of Deputies concluded, the plenary session of the corporation voted on the bill, which aimed to reverse the declaration of inadmissibility regarding certain bills.
In essence, the initiative – a motion proposed by the former President of the Chamber, José Miguel Castro (RN) – sought to increase the quorum required to reverse such a declaration (a power held by the highest authority of the corporation) and set it at an absolute majority (50 + 1), rather than a simple majority.
The difference is that the first quorum requires 78 votes, while the second can be achieved by obtaining half plus one of the deputies present at the time of the vote, which could be a significantly lower number than 78.
The initiative, presented in March of this year, was pushed forward by the government through legislative urgency measures – setting strict deadlines – to force the Chamber to approve it.
Furthermore, government sources claim that the General Secretariat of the Presidency, headed by Minister José García Ruminot (RN), initiated conversations with deputies who are not part of the government's ranks – such as Cristián Contreras (independent) and Sebastián Videla (independent - liberal) – to secure the bill's approval. This effort was ultimately successful, but the absence of official government deputies at that time ultimately led to its final defeat.
With the need to secure the 78 votes to…

This Tuesday afternoon, she debuted her radio program on "Pauta," which she will host every Tuesday. During the 55 minutes the program was on air, she dedicated a significant portion of the time to criticizing the major reform being pushed by the government of José Antonio Kast.
The former mayor questioned the employment incentives included in the project, calling them "useless." While she agreed with the government that the country faces significant economic problems, she dismissed more extreme diagnoses, contradicting the narrative the government has been trying to create. "Chile has problems," she stated, "but it's not a matter of saying the country is destroyed." She also criticized the tone of the political debate: "When you exaggerate everything and polarize the situation, the country doesn't progress."
Matthei also stated that the proposed "tax credit for companies for employees" would cost $1.4 billion per year. "That's outrageous," she said. "It's a very, very bad proposal." Furthermore, she criticized the elimination of contributions for the first home for people over 65. "I think it's completely contradictory," she said.
Her words were not well-received by the Republican Party, which has been critical of the former mayor for years. "Chile Vamos..."

Specifically, the legal action adds two specific instances to the February complaint: one relates to the chain of financing structured to invest in a real estate project in the United States; and the second, to financing obtained from Atlas Bank.
Development in Miami
The complaint details that, during the second half of 2022, Sartor, through various vehicles and funds, "allocated a significant amount of resources to invest directly or indirectly in a real estate project in Miami," known as One River Point, located at 90 SW 3rd Street, Miami, and originally developed by KAR Properties.

In the Metropolitan Region, precipitation is expected to begin around midday on Wednesday, although the afternoon and evening will see the highest intensity.
However, rainfall has already been felt in the south of our country.
Damage in Southern Chile
The autumn rains have arrived in the southern region of the country, where the first signs of damage are already being observed. One of the most affected regions is Los Lagos, particularly in the municipality of San Juan de la Costa, where six homes have suffered damage.
Up to 50 mm of rainfall is expected
The projected amounts vary depending on the area: between 5 and 20 mm in the center of Santiago, and between 10 and 30 mm in municipalities in the southwest, such as Melipilla or San Pedro. In areas near the foothills and in the mountains, up to 50 mm of water could fall.
The Mountain Range: Most Vulnerable
The areas most vulnerable will be those near the mountain range, where not only higher levels of accumulated water are expected, but also wind gusts that could reach 80 km/h, along with thunderstorms and a possible hailstorm.
Focus on Infrastructure
In the central valley, the focus is on the ability of urban infrastructure to respond. With estimated amounts between 5 and 20 mm in the center of Santiago, the main risk is localized flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage or where waste accumulates.

Autumn rains have arrived in the southern region of the country, and the first impacts are already being observed. One of the most affected areas is Los Lagos, particularly in the municipality of San Juan de la Costa, where six homes have suffered damage.
According to the Regional Directorate of SENAPRED (National System for Disaster Prevention and Response), classes have been suspended in all educational institutions in the municipality of San Juan de la Costa.
In addition, the Choroy Traiguén River overflowed, and there was a collapse and increase in water flow in streams, as well as smaller landslides. This has caused damage in the Contaco, Río Sur, Casa de Latas, Río Sur street, Maicolpué (commercial premises and homes), Pucatrihue, and Liucura areas.
Due to the heavy rains, eight students from the Bahía Mansa school had to be sheltered in the school building because they were unable to return to their homes in the Río Sur area of Maicolpué.
Furthermore, four people remain isolated in the Liucura area, waiting for the water levels in the surrounding streams to recede.
SENAPRED also reported that traffic diversions are in place on Route U-400 due to the overflow of local waterways and erosion of slopes.

The Professional Referees Union (Arbifup) responded to the criticisms made by Daniel Garnero, following the 2-2 draw between UC and Universidad de Concepción. Through its social media channels, the union posted a story with the message: "With bodybuilders and more fascists," a direct reference to the statements made by the coach of the team from the foothills. Hours later, the photograph was removed.
In a press conference, the coach of Universidad Católica questioned the performance of the referee in the Copa de la Liga match and made the controversial statement: "The referees are all bodybuilders, they wear makeup, they have a certain look. They know the rules by heart, but they often miss the essence of the game. And it's not just in Chile."
"I'm very frustrated because I can't analyze the game. We played with one less player for a long time, and the team held on, persevered, but we couldn't make clear transitions," he added.
His criticisms stemmed from decisions made by the referee, Mario Salvo. "The play where the foul occurred, the yellow card was justified, but in the previous instance, he did nothing and the referee gave him a yellow card. Why? He left us with one less player because he wanted to," he said.
The coach elaborated on his concerns. "The first problem was that we were down a player due to the irresponsibility of the referee. Can you explain the first yellow card? The player did nothing, he was fouled; the opponent was looking for him, and then he confronted Gary, and the referee said nothing to him..."

Throughout the day, earthquakes of varying intensities have been recorded in different parts of the country.
However, most of these tremors are imperceptible, as Chile is located on the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates, whose movements generate vibrations in the Earth's crust.
For safety reasons, it is important to stay informed about recent earthquakes occurring in the country, a task carried out by the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.
Earthquake today, Wednesday, May 6th, in Chile.
These are the earthquakes reported by the Seismology Department:

Earthquake of magnitude 4.7, located 58 km west of Tongoy and at a depth of 29 km.
What to do in case of an earthquake
The National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred) has provided some recommendations on how to act in the event of a significant seismic event.
These are the suggestions provided by Senapred:
Stay calm and find a seismically safe location.
Protect yourself under a sturdy object. If that is not possible, stay next to the object.
Turn off the electricity and close the water and gas valves.
If you are on the street, move away from buildings, poles, and electrical wires.
If you are at a mass event, the person should stay in place and protect their head and neck with their arms. Additionally, they should follow the instructions of the staff…

DEAR EDITOR:
There are proposals that, under a veneer of compassion, ultimately reveal who the State decides to protect. The idea of eliminating property taxes for certain elderly individuals falls squarely into this category: it is not a social policy, but a regressive transfer of resources from the poorest municipalities to high-net-worth property owners.
Official data clearly demonstrates the absurdity of the situation. In Chile, 77% of homes are already exempt from property taxes. Among elderly homeowners, over a million are already not paying this tax, and nearly 190,000 are already receiving existing discounts or benefits. Therefore, the new measure focuses on approximately 200,000 people: a small group located among the highest-income and wealthiest sectors of the country.
The estimated fiscal cost is US$200 million. The announced compensation to the Municipal Common Fund amounts to only US$130 million; in other words, all Chileans will be paying for the relief provided to the wealthiest elderly individuals in the country. The shortfall is significant: US$70 million less for municipalities with fewer resources, the very municipalities that need to fund security, primary healthcare, schools, and basic services. To put it bluntly: it benefits affluent property owners in wealthy municipalities, while weakening La Pintana, Bajos de Mena, and many other impoverished areas.
The problem of some elderly individuals with low pensions and undervalued homes…

DEAR EDITOR:
The recent images of school violence raise a recurring question: what is happening to these young people? We propose another: what have we done to them?
The data is compelling. Reports of school violence increased by 74% between 2023 and 2024. Forty-four percent of students in the second year of secondary school report having been victims of bullying. A study in Frontiers in Education revealed that 63% of Chilean adolescents show signs of anxiety, and 60% exhibit symptoms of depression. In any other area of medicine, we would call this an epidemic.
This crisis is not accidental. It is the result of structural failures: an education system that the OECD identifies as the most segregated among its members, an investment in mental health that does not exceed 2% of total spending—compared to the 5% that has been pledged—and a child and adolescent care system that only reaches 20%. The events in Calama, with the death of teacher Katherine Yoma in 2024 and inspector María Victoria Reyes in 2026, brutally illustrate what it means to govern without prioritizing the mental health of children and adolescents.
It is concerning that there is a tendency to pathologize school violence as if it were an individual clinical problem. A diagnosis does not change the neighborhood. A prescription does not replace public policy. What protects an adolescent are safe relationships, a sense of community, and the real presence of the state. None of that comes with a prescription.
Chile has laws and programs. What is lacking is the will...

Every move made by Carlos Montes is being closely watched by the Republican Party. During the past week, the party's representatives have been gathering information and thoroughly examining the possibility of bringing a constitutional accusation against the former Minister of Housing under Gabriel Boric, and a member of the Socialist Party.
Within the governing coalition, based on a report issued by the Comptroller's Office, there are accusations that the former senator made overpriced land purchases for victims of the major fire in Valparaíso.
The Republicans' plan is to wait until the Comptroller's Office presents its findings in the Chamber of Deputies, scheduled for next week, before deciding whether to pursue the accusation. However, according to those who have been involved in studying the merits of the accusation, there is already a strong conviction within the party that the formal charges should be made public.
In response to the Republicans' announcement of a possible accusation, some parliamentarians from the "Chile Vamos" coalition have also expressed their willingness to support the move.
Montes' Defense
The Republicans' offensive in Congress comes despite the fact that the former minister defended himself on Tuesday before the Housing Commission of the Senate.
The former Secretary of State arrived at the session, which had a majority opposition, accompanied by Senator Paulina Vodanovic, the president of the Socialist Party (where Montes is a member). There, in Valparaíso, the former senator presented his case before a predominantly opposition audience (Fidel …

On Tuesday, the mayor of La Pintana, Claudia Pizarro, traveled to Congress. The Christian Democrat politician went to Valparaíso to meet with the parliamentary group of her party, representing all the mayors affiliated with the party, with the aim of encouraging the parliamentarians to oppose the government's large-scale project led by José Antonio Kast.
This occurred amidst ongoing discussions between the Christian Democrats and the executive branch regarding this matter, which prompted them to visit La Moneda on Monday to present their own economic proposal and to connect their technical experts with those from the Ministry of Finance, led by Jorge Quiroz, in order to jointly analyze potential modifications.
This development caused discomfort among several members of the Falange party, which has defined itself as an opposition to the Kast government. In this context, Mayor Claudia Pizarro had lunch with the Christian Democrat and independent parliamentarians, where she expressed her concerns about the proposals outlined in the government's large-scale project, particularly regarding contributions, a sensitive issue for local authorities.
"The Christian Democrats should reject this project," stated the mayor of La Pintana.
"We are very concerned about the law that is being presented and will be debated, which also concerns the municipal common fund and its reduction. A new episode of rainfall is expected this week. According to forecasts from the Chilean Meteorological Service, unstable conditions will develop starting on Tuesday, bringing rain, wind, and possible thunderstorms from the south to the central region of the country. The capital will also experience significant effects starting in the afternoon of Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday.
The meteorological agency has issued warnings for normal to moderate rainfall in the regions of O'Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, and Biobío, with accumulated amounts potentially ranging from 25 to 50 millimeters. Rainfall began in the Biobío region on Tuesday, while on Wednesday, it will extend to the rest of the central-southern regions. In addition, there are warnings for strong winds in seven regions, including the Metropolitan Region, and for possible thunderstorms from Valparaíso to Biobío. All of this comes with the possibility of hail and intense gusts in certain areas.
This event is associated with a strengthened frontal system influenced by an atmospheric river, a phenomenon that involves a high concentration of water vapor transported from tropical regions to mid-latitudes. According to experts, this configuration increases the available moisture and favors more intense precipitation, especially when it interacts with the country's geography.
"The atmospheric river contributes a large amount of water vapor, which, when interacting with the mountain range, promotes the formation of clouds..."

According to the prosecution, the Chinese citizen Xiaotong Wu played a significant role in the drug trafficking operations of the Bang mafia from Fujian in Chile. Wu, who was sentenced to four years of supervised release for drug trafficking, held a leadership position in the cultivation of large quantities of marijuana in the O'Higgins region.
When the banking secrecy on Wu's accounts at BancoEstado and Banco Santander was lifted in May 2024, it opened a Pandora's Box, revealing new evidence and individuals implicated in the case, according to investigators. This complex criminal structure was "difficult to detect in the short term," they said. The investigation revealed that in 2023, a company previously unknown to investigators transferred $27.4 million to the Chinese citizen.
Detectives identified the company as "Compra y Venta Cintia Zapata Vásquez E. I. R. L.," which was registered in March 2021 and is owned by a woman of the same name.

In Chile, online casinos continue to operate in a legal gray area that remains unresolved. Currently, the country lacks a comprehensive licensing system, and the authorities maintain a firm stance, arguing that these platforms cannot legally operate on a commercial basis until a law specifically regulates them. Therefore, before considering bonuses, games, or promotions, it is crucial to understand the legal framework in which these operations are taking place.
What does Chilean regulation currently say?
The Superintendency of Casinos (Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego) states in its frequently asked questions that in Chile, gambling activities can only operate when a special law authorizes them. Within this framework, the Superintendency reminds us that certain entities are explicitly authorized, such as the national lottery, racetracks, and regulated land-based casinos, but there is no general authorization for private online gambling platforms. The authority itself adds that, as long as the bill remains under consideration in the Senate, it does not have the authority to regulate or oversee these websites.
Why is there still confusion?
The confusion does not stem from a lack of available options, but rather from the gap that still exists between the actual market and the legal framework. While these platforms are accessible to Chilean users, it does not mean they are operating under a valid Chilean license. Meanwhile, the bill to regulate this activity continues to progress in the Senate, having already been approved in general terms and currently under discussion in detail...

Five in the morning. The Nuevo Pudahuel airport has that sterile atmosphere common to places where no one wants to linger for long. Don Francisco had been complaining about the distances between the boarding gates and the waiting rooms in the international terminal. And he's right: it takes ten or fifteen minutes to walk from the airplane door to immigration. The line to collect luggage in the new international terminal is a festival of yawns and "I-didn't-get-enough-sleep" hairstyles. But sometimes, even at these ungodly hours, there's something new. The idea that a plane might stay in the air seems like a thing of the past; the modern traveler's anxiety is something much more grounded: that their luggage will arrive, and that it will, moreover, end up on the same conveyor belt.
Twenty hours earlier, in a hotel room at the other end of the continent, I placed the second generation of the Apple AirTag in the inner pocket of my suitcase. It's still a metallic disc, the size of a 500-peso coin, but this time it promises an extended range and a more precise ultra-wideband chip than its predecessor.

Once the airline attaches the barcode label, the luggage enters a subterranean labyrinth of scanners, rollers, and motorized carts that passengers never see.

Insulza addressed the recent raid on the CDA (presumably a relevant institution) during the investigations into the Sartor case, and discussed the role he expects to play on the board.

He was accompanied by Jorge Yunge, the general secretary of the ANFP (National Professional Football Association). They did not expect to be surprised by the press. However, they were photographed entering the facility in a white van. The surprising meeting took place just two days after Arturo Vidal had strongly criticized the work of the referees, and only four days before the highly anticipated clásico match between Colo Colo and Universidad Católica, at the Pedreros stadium. This was a high-stakes match, as the coach, Jorge Almirón, was under pressure to perform well. As expected, the meeting caused widespread concern among the clubs. "The timing was terrible, completely inappropriate," they said at the time. Although the former referee tried to justify his presence in Macul by claiming he would be meeting with all the teams to explain the criteria used in the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system, his actions resulted in a severe reprimand from the board, led by Pablo Milad. One of the measures included in the government's omnibus bill, or "megareform," is the elimination of the training system operated by the National Service for Training and Employment (Sence), which is currently funded through a tax incentive.
"Training is a driver of modernization and equity, based on a public-private partnership that has proven to be effective and should be strengthened, not dismantled," commented Romanina Morales, the former national director of Sence. The government requested her resignation in March, and she officially left her position on April 30th.
Romanina joined Sence as an advisor during the previous administration, in March 2022, and became the national director in June 2023 after winning a competitive selection process for senior public administration positions. Now, the executive branch will have to launch a new selection process to find her replacement.
The government justifies the elimination of this mechanism by arguing that it has not functioned well and that its fiscal cost reaches US$300 million annually. Do you agree with this assessment?

On Monday, during the traditional briefing held in the Chamber of Deputies, the document was more extensive than usual, comprising a total of 31 files.
The issue that triggered a surprising offensive by right-wing deputies against the President of the Chamber, Jorge Alessandri (UDI), was an initiative presented by the Frente Amplio coalition.
In point 27, the parliamentary proposal – including Gael Yeomans (the parliamentary leader), Matías Fernández, and Emilia Schneider – grants the General Treasury of the Republic (TGR) three powers within the framework of collecting debt related to the State-Guaranteed Credit (CAE) program.
The right-wing's defeat occurred because Schneider requested that the proposal be sent to the Committee on Science, chaired by Daniel Manouchehri (PS), rather than to the Finance Committee, as some right-wing deputies had requested. However, the proposal ultimately ended up in the Committee on Education.
The representatives of the ruling party argued that the initiative would be unconstitutional because it would impose fiscal expenditure, as well as create new powers for the TGR.
"I would like to know if this proposal incurs any expenditure, and what the secretariat's opinion is," said Deputy and UDI President, Guillermo Ramírez.

A few days ago, the former Minister of Housing, Carlos Montes (PS), visited the Pits building in Bellavista to meet with former President Gabriel Boric in his office.
The meeting had been scheduled before the former President's trip to Barcelona, Spain, and those who were aware of the discussions say that various topics were addressed.
One topic was unavoidable: the threat of a constitutional accusation being considered by the ruling party against the former PS Secretary of State and other members of Boric's cabinet.
According to the same sources, the issue was discussed superficially, as it was not the primary purpose of the meeting.
Today, the possibility of Montes being accused by the right-wing has been brewing within the Republican Party, which has more than 30 members in the Chamber of Deputies. On June 1st, winter officially begins, at least in terms of weather, which brings a series of consequences for health. This is the time of year when respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold, flu, influenza, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia, tend to increase significantly.
To try to reduce the number of cases, the Ministry of Health conducts an annual vaccination campaign, which focuses primarily on influenza, as well as COVID-19.
According to official data, and considering a target population of 10,033,617, 6,246,338 people have received their first and only dose, representing a progress of 62.25%. To achieve adequate protection against influenza, a coverage rate of 85% of the target population must be reached.
However, when examining the data by age group, the lowest vaccination rate, at 50.31% (653,675), corresponds to children aged 6 months to 5 years. Next, people aged 60 years or older, with a vaccination rate of 51.86% (2,136,136).
Regarding this, Paula Daza, Executive Director of the Center for Public Policy in Innovation in Health at the Universidad del Desarrollo, highlights a recent survey conducted by the same university, which indicates that the main barrier to vaccination is not physical access, but rather a different factor. The offices of the Azul Sports Center and the residence of Michel Clark, former president of Azul Azul, the company that manages the Universidad de Chile club, were raided this Monday as part of an investigation being conducted by the East Prosecutor's Office regarding the case of the asset management company Sartor AGF. Similar searches were also conducted at the residences of other companies linked to Clark.
According to sources close to the case, the Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating financial irregularities, including incompatible transactions, fraud related to the Securities Market Law, and failure to make a public offer to acquire shares, among other things.
At the end of 2024, the Financial Market Commission (CMF) confirmed the revocation of the operating license of the investment fund management company Sartor, a company that, until that time, held the majority of shares in Azul Azul. Several months later, the CMF initiated a sanctioning process against the fund management company and eight of its former directors and executives, including Michael Clark, who was then president of Azul Azul.
The Investigation Unit informed the CMF Council about the commencement of "an administrative sanctioning procedure against Sartor Administradora General de Fondos S. Cell phones can facilitate numerous tasks in our daily routines. However, excessive use has been linked to a range of mental health consequences, particularly due to the vast amount of content available, for example, on social media platforms.
A letter published in the Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine a decade ago already warned about the risks that the "obsession with mobile phones" can pose to public health.
The authors of the letter at that time warned that this was a "growing global threat." They argued that excessive use should be "considered an addiction, similar to addiction to tobacco and alcohol."
In early 2026, specialists from the University Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Chile stated that the problem is not the cell phone itself, but rather the constant access it provides to potentially addictive content.
Examples of such content include online gambling, video games, social media, and pornography, the experts said.
Specialists generally consider there to be a cell phone addiction when a person exhibits psychological dependence and compulsive behavior related to excessive use.
For example, they might experience symptoms of anxiety or irritability if they are without their cell phone. In some cases, even the mere thought of not having their smartphone can…

The congressman and leader of the Renovación Nacional party, and a member of the Chamber's Finance Committee, Diego Schalper, addressed the discussion of the major project – which is being resumed this week – as well as the deadlines, considering that it has an urgent deadline expiring on May 7th.
In an interview with Radio Duna today, and when asked whether the deadlines were sufficient for the project to be approved by the committee, the congressman stated that "political timelines must be adjusted to the needs," and that, in his opinion, what should guide them is "what we need to do to reactivate the economy, to address the growing situation of unemployment and informality that affects Chileans, and to put Chile back on the path of economic recovery, productivity, and development. That must be our guiding principle."
"Tomorrow morning, the Autonomous Fiscal Council will meet, and from there, decisions will be made," he said. "What I hope for is a thorough and rigorous debate, but that we don't prolong discussions that, at the end of the day, are about development strategies."
Regarding another matter, when asked about the interview given yesterday by the Minister of Finance, Jorge Quiroz, in which he addressed the controversy surrounding certain documents and acknowledged an error, stating that "the document contained an administrative error; a document was missing. Daniel Garnero exploded after Universidad Católica drew away against Universidad de Concepción. Darío Melo was the hero, saving two penalties in the final minutes, but the referees, Mario Salvo (the main referee) and Matías Assadi (VAR), who is the brother of Lucas, a midfielder for Universidad de Chile, were at the center of the controversy, a situation that once again casts doubt on the work of Roberto Tobar as the head of the referees.
The Cruzado coach lashed out at the referees' performance: "The foul that resulted in the yellow card was correctly called, but in the previous instance, the referee did nothing and still gave a yellow card. Why? He left us with one less player because he wanted to," the Argentine coach said during the TNT Sports broadcast.
The sending-off of José Ignacio Salas was truly incredible, as he received two yellow cards in just over a minute. In the first instance, the 18-year-old defender received a yellow card for a very slight push against Agustín Urzi, who had previously tried to hit him with a slap after a dispute for the ball. Both players were shown the card, a decision that was quite strict with the young Cruzado defender. In the next play, he was late to a challenge with the Argentine player. The referee didn't hesitate and sent him off.
Earlier, in an unusual and improper decision, the referee stopped a dangerous attack by the Cruzado team in the home team's area to give a yellow card to Facundo Mater for attacking Matías Palavecino without the ball being involved. It seemed like the referee was going to send off…

Earthquake today, Monday, May 4th, in Chile.
These are the earthquakes reported by the Seismology Department:
4:22 AM
Earthquake of magnitude 4.6, located 27 km west of Caldera and at a depth of 35 km.
What to do in case of an earthquake:
The National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred) provided some recommendations on how to act during a significant seismic event.
If you are at a mass event, stay in place and protect your head and neck with your arms. Also, follow the instructions of the staff…

DEAR EDITOR:
On December 23, 2025, the Superintendency of Education issued Circular No. 781, which completely modified the mandatory minimum content of the internal regulations of basic and secondary education schools. Its implementation began on March 1, 2026, with a deadline of June for schools to adjust their regulations. Throughout January, hundreds of schools worked to comply with it; many administrators responsible for student conduct and principals postponed their vacations, aware that doing so during the school year would be impossible.
On January 28, the Chamber of Deputies sent the bill on "Coexistence, Respectful Treatment, and Well-being of Educational Communities" to the Constitutional Court, which again regulated the same minimum content. On February 20, the Superintendency issued Circular No. 160, postponing the implementation of Circular No. 781 without eliminating its content, so many schools continued to consider it valid. The previous week, it was finally repealed.
A month of work was lost in January, and several more days in March and April. Hours that could have been dedicated to planning lessons and designing strategies for coexistence and inclusion were wasted due to the lack of coordination between the Ministry and the Superintendency. This is not an isolated incident. It is yet another example of authorities who improvise, regulate without considering the consequences, and pass the cost of their lack of coordination on to educational communities. Each change undermines the system that should protect rights. And the result is a…

Daniel Garnero didn't hold back. After the draw between UC and Universidad de Concepción, he took only seconds to criticize the referee, Manuel Salvo. "The play where the foul occurred, the player was rightly cautioned. In the previous instance, the referee did nothing, and then cautioned the player. Why? He left us with one less player because he wanted to," he exclaimed during the TNT Sports television broadcast, shortly after the game ended.
The passing of time didn't bring him any peace. The Cruzado coach insisted on his concerns about the officiating, a discussion that became even more detailed in the mixed zone at the Ester Roa Rebolledo stadium.
Garnero lashes out at the officiating: "They are all bodybuilders, they have a certain look, but they make a lot of mistakes in the game."
The strategist didn't mince words. "The first problem was that we were down a player due to the referee's irresponsibility. Can someone explain the first yellow card? The player did nothing, he was fouled; the opponent was coming after him, and then he confronted Gary, and the referee said nothing to him, but cautioned him. The second was a mistake, he was wrong, and we were left with one less player, and that changed the game," he began.
The next criticism was, without a doubt, the most pointed. "I don't know... honestly, if he did it on purpose, I understand, because it can happen; but if not, it's worrying. The penalty against Pancho (Rossel) is a penalty and a yellow card, and he cautioned him for simulation. Today, the referees are all bodybuilders, they wear makeup, they have a certain look, they're..."

The first half-hour of the match between Universidad de Concepción and Universidad Católica in the Copa de la Liga saw the most controversial moment of the game: Agustín Urzi and José Salas got into a heated argument, pushing and insulting each other on the sideline, and both were shown yellow cards by the referee, Mario Salvo.
But the worst was yet to come. The game resumed, and Salas fouled Urzi, receiving his second yellow card. This meant that Universidad Católica was reduced to 10 players, and they had a long way to go to try and maintain the lead they had at that point (1-2).
Ultimately, they failed to do so. David Retamal equalized the score in the 81st minute, and both university teams shared the points, leaving Ñublense as the sole leader of Group B, which angered Universidad Católica's coach, Daniel Garnero.
"The foul was a clear yellow card offense, but in the previous incident, he didn't do anything, and the referee still showed him a yellow card. Why? We were left with one less player because he wanted to," the coach of the team from Las Condes said on TNT Sports.
Not content with that, Garnero insisted and stated that "with 10 players in today's football, where spaces are exploited and the pitch is soft, it was difficult. Perhaps we lacked the transitions to create attacking opportunities, but we were defending well. The problem with the game wasn't in our strategy or the opponent; it was because we were left with one less player due to a very serious error by the referee."

Darío Melo became the hero for Universidad Católica. The goalkeeper was crucial in helping the team maintain the draw during their visit to Universidad de Concepción. He saved two penalties in the closing moments of the match, a performance that echoed Sebastián Pérez's save in the Copa Sudamericana, during the Palestino vs. Gremio draw. However, "Zanahoria" (Melo's nickname) blocked three consecutive shots.
Daniel Garnero fielded a completely different team with the aim of giving his star players a rest before facing Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores this Wednesday. This allowed the goalkeeper to shine and steal the spotlight.
In the final minutes of regulation time, Cristian Cuevas brought down Jeison Fuentealba, the standout player for Campanil, inside the penalty area. The referee, Juan Salvo, awarded a penalty, despite being prompted by VAR. After reviewing the marginal foul, the referee confirmed his initial decision, despite the protests from the Cruzados players.
That's when Darío Melo's show began, as he saved two penalties from Cecilio Waterman. Initially, the Panamanian player shot wide, but the penalty had to be retaken due to encroachment. Then, he opened his foot, but the goalkeeper rose to the occasion again, just a few minutes before the end of regulation time.

The Minister of Security, Trinidad Steinert, was questioned at a press conference regarding the alert issued by the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI) about a possible "malicious activity" on platforms used by public institutions.
When asked about the progress of the investigations, the minister stated that the ANCI was responsible for the matter and that the agency "is gathering all available information to determine if there are any individuals responsible and whether an illegal act has indeed occurred."
She also said that this is a "sensitive issue, and therefore, we need the respective investigations to be conducted by this specialized department."
Steinert is the first minister to publicly address this situation since the ANCI issued the warning about a potential cyberattack on Friday.
A few hours ago, the interim director of the ANCI, Michelle Bordachar, reported in an interview with T13 that they had detected an intrusion into a public institution linked to the theft of access data from an employee.
While she stated that she is not authorized to reveal the name of the affected institution, she said that they were able to determine that this situation did not occur due to a hacking or attack on the infrastructure, but rather that the employee's username and password were stolen, and the perpetrators gained access by impersonating him to obtain information.
According to Bordachar, this situation has already been resolved after all access points were closed.

Daniel Garnero's plan didn't work out. A second-string Universidad Católica team drew 2-2 in their visit to Universidad de Concepción, in an entertaining match at the Ester Roa stadium. Ñublense, the leader of Group B in the Copa de la Liga, celebrated the draw. Their next objective? A match against Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores.
UC traveled to the Biobío region with the international match next Wednesday in mind. That's why the Argentine coach fielded a completely substitute starting eleven. The team was far from the performance they have shown in their recent major appearances at the continental level, but they managed to secure the result despite playing with one less player for the last 30 minutes.
The student team went into the match needing a win to stay in the fight for a place in Group B of the tournament, the same obligation for Universidad de Concepción. A defeat would have complicated their respective situations in the Copa de la Liga.
An intense match under heavy rain
The match began with a lively atmosphere at the Campanil stadium, despite the heavy rain, driven by the talented Jeison Fuentealba. The energetic young player from the U caused problems for the opposing team just 3 minutes into the game. He created a great opportunity for Agustín Urzi, who was behind the Cruzados defense. The Argentine received the pass and scored with a lob over Darío Melo. A fantastic goal to open the scoring, just as the Cruzados were settling in.
Shortly after, the equalizer came. Osvaldo González made a mistake in the build-up and tried to recover when Juan F...

The acting director of the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI), Michelle Bordachar, confirmed that they detected a breach in a public institution linked to the theft of access credentials from an employee.
This follows an announcement made on Friday that intelligence reports indicated "potential malicious activity."
During an interview with T13 this Sunday, the lawyer clarified that, in this case, threat actors used information that was already circulating on the internet, from previous leaks, and organized and correlated it.
In this regard, she explained that a monitoring process was conducted on the platforms of all affected institutions.
"And only one of them showed that there was, in fact, active data leakage, but not because the infrastructure was hacked or attacked, or because servers were compromised or accessed through unauthorized technological means. Instead, an employee at that institution had their username and password stolen, and the attackers gained access by impersonating them to obtain information," she stated.
Bordachar indicated that as soon as the affected parties were informed of the incident, "all access was closed, and the data leakage stopped."
"I want to be very clear that only a very small portion of the information circulating corresponds to data that was exfiltrated in the last few days. The rest of the information, unfortunately, was already circulating before," she assured.

The Executive branch has decided to expedite the legislative process for a bill that prohibits soccer players from entering into advertising contracts with betting companies, according to members of parliament from the Independent Democratic Union (UDI).
Marco Antonio Sulantay and Hotuiti Teao, deputies from the UDI and members of the Lower House's Sports Committee, made the announcement. They had previously sent a request to the government to expedite the bill, and they indicated that it could begin its review process in the coming days within the Sports Committee.
"It is very important that the Executive branch has taken note of our request and is giving priority to this initiative, because we are talking about protecting the transparency of sports and preventing these types of practices from becoming normalized, which, in our opinion, can seriously affect the development of this activity," said the two members of the Sports Committee.
The bill was presented in December 2023, following repeated instances of soccer players appearing in advertisements for betting companies, according to the party.
Teao and Sulantay emphasized two key aspects that are central to their concerns in this matter. First, they pointed out that for thousands of young people, soccer players are role models, and their association with betting companies can send confusing messages. Second, they highlighted the conflict of interest and incompatibility that these associations represent.

On Friday, May 1st, shortly after 1:00 PM, the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI) issued a statement on its website and social media channels, addressing reports from intelligence sources that described a potential malicious activity involving data from telecommunications operators and public services.
In the statement, they indicated that they were working to "verify the veracity of the claims made and, if appropriate, take the necessary measures."
The publication referred to information that had circulated in the 48 hours prior.
"It has not been possible to confirm the authenticity or scope of the information that allegedly had been compromised," they warned.
Days earlier, on April 25th, Vecert Analyzer, a company in the cybersecurity field, reported on its X account a "critical intelligence alert regarding cyber threats," claiming that there was a "system compromise within the healthcare sector linked to routing services."
On May 1st, which was Labor Day, they indicated that there were reports from alleged attackers claiming to have "breached the management system of the National Statistics Institute (INE)."

One of the standout players in the Universidad de Chile's dominant victory over La Serena in the Copa de la Liga was Ignacio Vásquez. The young forward scored a goal (44'), provided an assist at La Portada, and was named the man of the match by the official broadcast.
"I'm very happy with the victory. We needed to win convincingly... And I'm showing my game, which is to attack, so I'm very grateful to my teammates and to coach Fernando Gago," the left winger said in an interview with TNT Sports.
And it couldn't have been any other way, because since the arrival of the Argentine coach, Vásquez has become a key player for the team. While he had already been coming on as a substitute under Paqui Meneghini, Gago has been starting him from the beginning, including in his debut in the Copa de la Liga (a defeat against La Calera).
Since then, he has started in five matches and played in the second half of two more (against Ñublense and Everton in the Primera División). However, all of his appearances have involved a significant sacrifice.
In the last few days of March, the player from San Bernardo suffered a grade 2 acromioclavicular sprain in his right shoulder. Although initial diagnoses suggested he would be out for a month, he chose the more difficult path: getting pain injections to avoid discomfort on the field.

"One day, he might be walking and notice that the color of the paint on the wall doesn't match, and he'll point it out clearly at that very moment," explains someone familiar with the situation, describing Manfred Paulmann Koepfer's attention to detail, a characteristic he inherited from his father, Horst Paulmann Kemna.
However, everyone interviewed agrees that if someone is looking for another "HP" in Manfred Paulmann, as those who knew the founder of Cencosud, who passed away a year ago, identified him, they are mistaken. "He has some similarities, but they are very different," says a former colleague.
Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that Manfred Paulmann's influence will be evident in the presidency of Cencosud, a position he assumed last Thursday, April 24th, after being elected by the board to replace Julio Moura. The Brazilian had taken over in December 2023, following the resignation of Heike, the youngest of the three Paulmann Koepfer siblings.
And if there are two words that could characterize this approach, they would be innovation and speed.
Retail at its core
The eldest son of Horst Paulmann and Helga Koepfer Schoebitz, Manfred Paulmann Koepfer (58) was born in Santiago on May 30, 1967, when his father's business was thriving in the south, where he and his brother Jurgen had founded the Las Brisas supermarkets.
He spent his childhood and adolescence traveling between Argentina and Chile due to his father's work, but with a base at the Deutsche Schule (German School).

Two weeks ago, José Miguel Insulza could not have imagined himself as the director of the company that governs the University of Chile's football club (Azul Azul). However, a call from the current vice-president of the club, lawyer José Ramón Correa, convinced him to accept the position at the age of 82, for which he was elected last Tuesday, April 28th.
"I thought about it for a while, because I have other commitments as well. But the truth is, I have dedicated so many years of my life to football that I don't see any reason not to be the director of the football team that I have supported since I first saw the Ballet Azul play," said the man who has served as a minister, senator, and Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS).
Football has changed a lot since that time; the clubs have transformed into corporations...
I must confess that when this transformation began, I thought it was a good thing. But I believe it has not been what one expected. The people who join these sports corporations, like any other corporation, do so to make money. And although I thought that, in the case of football, the love for the institution would be more important, it has become more commercialized than I thought.
Was the reform of the law on Sports Corporations necessary?
I believe it is a useful and important reform. It does not solve all the problems, but it will make significant progress in that direction. As a certain political scientist said: "When trust is lost, everything goes to hell."

This week marks the ninety-ninth anniversary of the founding of the Chilean National Police (Carabineros). This is not a trivial anniversary, not only because the institution is approaching its first century of existence, but also because it is the first anniversary since the government that aimed to abolish it came to an end. The leaders of the Broad Front and the Communist Party – including President Boric – denounced the Carabineros as a police force that systematically violated human rights, arguing that it should be reformed.
The constitutional text that the Convention proposed to the country – something we should always remember – eliminated any mention of the Carabineros, referring generically to the existence of police forces and characterizing them as "non-military." This was an obvious reference to the discipline that forms the cultural essence of the Carabineros, while also defining them as police forces with a "gender perspective" and imposing on them the duty to promote "gender equality in decision-making spaces."
This is all very consistent with the accusations that were made just a few months earlier, regarding the existence of "torture centers" in Metro stations, the justification of violence against them, and that elegant verse, clearly lacking gender equality, with which they insulted female officers. It is a verse that does not need to be repeated, but it will always be unforgettable.
Now, as a former president, Gabriel Boric is attending the celebration ceremony for the police force that...
