Police officers apprehended a man who, while attempting to evade a police checkpoint, nearly hit pedestrians while driving a vehicle that had been stolen in the Ñuñoa district. Officers from the 42nd Mobile Patrol and Police Intervention Unit of the Carabineros (Chilean police) successfully arrested the individual who was driving a high-end car that had been stolen just 24 hours earlier during a violent robbery. The operation took place around 1:10 PM this Wednesday, when a patrol unit was conducting preventative patrols in the Arquén passage in La Pintana. As they approached the intersection with General Arriagada Street, the officers noticed that the driver of an Infiniti QX30 accelerated to try to escape upon noticing the police presence. The uniformed police officers decided to initiate a controlled pursuit from a distance, which extended to San Miguel Street. Just as the Carabineros institution is about to celebrate its 99th anniversary, a series of concerning reports have emerged, particularly regarding the composition of the police force. The staff has shown a tendency to stagnate over time, and projections indicate that the number of officers, especially those on patrol, will likely decrease in the future. Comparing the staffing levels projected for 2025 with those expected for this year, it is observed that the institution remains around 56,000 personnel. However, looking at the data from 2019, it is evident that approximately 3,000 personnel have been lost. The greatest concern lies with the operational Carabineros, or those working on the streets. While there were nearly 42,000 such officers in 2020, the number has been declining, and it is estimated that this year it will slightly exceed 38,000. It is not surprising that the majority of the more than 12,000 vacant positions within the Carabineros are for these types of officers. A relevant question is whether Chile has a police force that meets international standards. A study by AthenaLab indicated that in the first half of 2022, Chile had 230 officers per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that, while placing the country above the minimum recommended by the United Nations (180 per 100,000 inhabitants)…

A tragic fire broke out on Monday night in the municipality of Quellón, resulting in three fatalities. The flames completely destroyed two homes in the southern part of Chiloé Island, in the Los Lagos region. The fire started around 9:30 PM near the intersection of Ignacio Carrera Pinto and Doctor Ahues, spreading rapidly due to the conditions in the area and the proximity of the affected structures. The magnitude of the disaster required a large deployment of volunteer firefighters, who worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching an adjacent church. After hours of fighting the blaze, and once the emergency was under control, rescue teams began clearing debris, at which point the bodies of three people were found inside the damaged buildings. This was confirmed by Captain Sebastián Undurraga of the Sixth Carabineros Police Station, according to the news outlet El Insular. So far, the identities of the victims have not been released by the authorities. In addition, it was reported that a fourth person suffered burns and had to be assisted on the scene before being transported to a medical facility for treatment. The details of the case have been provided to the Public Prosecutor's Office by Carabineros personnel, with the aim of clarifying the causes of the fire.

This Monday morning, President José Antonio Kast visited the Police Academy to preside over the ceremony marking the 99th anniversary of the uniformed police force. At the academy, located in Providencia, the highest authority received honors from hundreds of officers representing various branches of the police who were participating in the commemoration. Beyond celebrating another anniversary of the institution, headed by Director General Marcelo Araya, there is particular concern within the government regarding the number of officers in the uniformed police force. According to figures obtained by La Tercera, in 2025, the institution comprised a total of 56,068 officers, while this year, it is projected to end with 56,509. Regardless of the figures, what is causing particular concern for the executive branch is that this number has been declining since 2019. In that year, the institution had 59,894 officers, meaning that in just seven years, the uniformed police force has lost more than three thousand officers. The government's concern is even greater regarding the police officers who are actually engaged in operational duties, that is, "on the streets." This is because, since 2019 to this year, 4,600 officers dedicated to "order and security" duties have been allowed to retire, as well as a decrease in the number of officers undergoing training. The above illustrates...

Following the announcements made on Monday by President José Antonio Kast, the Undersecretary of Security, Andrés Jouannet, provided further details regarding the support that will be provided to the Carabineros (Chilean police). "The President explained three fundamental things. First, we will be improving the conditions, primarily for the Carabineros themselves or for the families of Carabineros who have tragically been killed in the line of duty," he began, speaking from La Moneda (the presidential palace). He added: "Second, this also applies to Carabineros who have been involved in accidents while on duty. And third, a financial recognition will be provided to all Carabineros in service for the work they do." "A third crucial point is to work on improving the training schools. We have a real shortage of Carabineros, and we are losing a thousand officers annually, which is a figure known to all of you," the Undersecretary concluded. The package of measures was presented this morning by the President during his speech delivered at the Carabineros Training School in Providencia, as part of the institution's 99th anniversary celebrations.

A growing concern exists in the Valparaíso region following a sharp increase in reports of threats of shootings at educational institutions. Regarding this, the regional prosecutor of Valparaíso, Claudia Perivancich, confirmed that at least 232 reports have been recorded since March 23rd to last Friday, April 17th, indicating an escalation that has put a strain on the criminal justice system. The growth of electronic waste has ceased to be a mere trend and has become a structural problem. Globally, over 62 million tons of e-waste are generated each year, according to the 2024 Global E-waste Report by the United Nations, a figure that is growing at a rate three times faster than other types of waste. Chile is not immune to this phenomenon. Currently, the country produces approximately 11 kilograms per person, which places it among the countries that generate the most of this type of waste in the region. Projections indicate that this figure could increase to 14 kilograms per capita by 2027, with 45% coming from small devices, such as cell phones. Furthermore, it is estimated that each household accumulates around 40 electronic devices. The challenge lies not only in the volume but also in its management: in Chile, only about 3.2% of this waste is formally collected, which highlights a significant gap in infrastructure and access to recycling points. The focus is precisely on addressing this gap: the lack of simple and accessible alternatives for the proper disposal of this waste. According to data from Fundación Chile, the increase in e-waste in the country will be primarily driven by smaller devices, which are also the most common and often end up forgotten in drawers or discarded without proper treatment. In this context, WOM launched a recycling network...

A backpack containing a compressed air pistol and pepper spray was found in his possession. Later, a hearing was held to determine whether to maintain the preventive detention.
