DUBAI (AP).- Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new head of its Security Council, following the death of Ali Larijani. The official previously served as Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council and is a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Zolghadr will replace one of the most influential figures in the regime, to whom the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had entrusted negotiations with the United States before the February 28 attack in Tehran, which resulted in the Ayatollah's death. According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, Larijani died during a series of nighttime bombings. According to UN Security Council Resolution 1747, Zolghadr is on the sanctions list for his involvement in the regime's nuclear and missile programs. Zolghadr played a central role as a commander during the war between Iran and Iraq, and is considered one of the driving forces behind the Ramazan Garrison, which he led and whose operational structure served as a direct precursor to the Quds Force, the unit responsible for operations outside of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
