A total of 148,707 agricultural producers have received assistance in 17 departments of Honduras declared in a state of emergency due to drought, through the delivery of agricultural supplies and the development of projects to guarantee access to water in production zones.
The Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) reported that, as part of the response to the climate emergency, it has distributed 63,471 productive kits intended to support families that depend on agriculture and livestock.
The results were presented during the meeting of the 2026 Drought Technical Roundtable, which was attended by representatives of the SAG, the Permanent Contingencies Commission (Copeco), the World Food Programme (WFP), the National Congress, and other institutions linked to the agricultural sector.
Among the main actions is the construction of 13 reservoirs with geomembrane, which will have a combined storage capacity of 55,830 cubic meters of water for agricultural and livestock activities.
One of the already completed projects is located in Liure, El Paraíso, where a reservoir was built with a capacity to store 4,720 cubic meters and benefit 160 rural families. The project represented an investment of 800,000 lempiras by the SAG.
A project is also being developed in San Antonio de Flores, Choluteca, which will benefit approximately 450 families from communities such as Tegucigalpita, Loma Alta, Las Trojas, Montecrist…

To carry out these works, the Government made machinery available to municipal governments, while the SAG provides the geomembranes and the necessary resources. In addition to the reservoirs, there is an investment of 180 million lempiras to drill wells, install solar pumps, and develop drip irrigation systems, with the aim of reducing dependence on rainfall. Furthermore, through a cooperation program with Japan, 48 million lempiras will be allocated to enable 25 deep wells and incorporate irrigation systems in 125 productive hectares in Choluteca, Valle, Francisco Morazán, and El Paraíso. Of that budget, 39.9 million lempiras (US$1,442,057) come from the 2KR Counterpart Fund. The project also includes drilling equipment and technology to identify underground water sources. Another measure is a second phase of cloud seeding, which includes seven additional flights financed by the private sector, with an approximate investment of 250,000 dollars. The 13 projected reservoirs will have a combined storage capacity of 55,830 cubic meters of water to meet the needs of the agricultural sector. (Photo: SAG)This phase adds to the 20 flights previously carried out, with priority given to the Dry Corridor, Choluteca, and sugar-producing areas in Valle. The operations depend on atmospheric conditions and the formation of suitable clouds to attempt to encourage rainfall. The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Moisés Abraham Molina, acknowledged that 2026 has been one of the most difficult years in climate terms and highlighted that the support has also included cattle feed, especially during September and October, when rainfall and the availability of pasture and forage decreased. The assistance also includes basic grain seeds and fertilizers through the Production Incentive Program, in addition to support for coffee producers. In the long term, the authorities propose an investment of 40 million dollars annually for ten years, equivalent to 400 million dollars, to incorporate approximately 60,000 additional hectares under irrigation systems. The proposal seeks to ensure that more farmers can maintain their crops during periods of low rainfall and reduce losses associated with climate variability.
