MR. EDITOR:
The debris flow that occurred in Las Condes reminds us, on the eve of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, of the importance of anticipating. Much is said today about AI, but there is one area where its contribution can be key and has been left behind: disaster risk reduction. Chile has significant scientific and technological capabilities, but we still need to translate that knowledge into better decisions.
Law 21.364, which creates Sinapred, provides for an Integrated System for Disaster Risk Management (Sigrid), a digital infrastructure intended to gather, organize, share, and disseminate information useful for all phases of the risk cycle and administrative levels of the State. Its consolidation is urgent, precisely because it is essential for better characterizing hazards and anticipating their effects. AI can help accelerate data integration, the development of models and risk maps, and drive the development of Sigrid, enabling timely decisions that protect lives and infrastructure and foster the country's sustainable development.
