(Asiad) S. Korea picks up 2 silver medals in boxing

By Yoo Jee-ho NAGOYA, Japan, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea earned two silver medals on the last day of the boxing competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday. Jang Dong-hwan took silver after losing to Abdumalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan in the men's 60-kilogram final at Nishio Gymnasium in Nishio, about 40 kilometers south of Nagoya. Moments later, Kim Min-seong fell to Ankush Panghal of India in the final of the men's 80kg division. Jang Dong-hwan of South Korea (R) fights Abdumalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan during the men's 60-kilogram boxing final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games at Nishio Gymnasium in Nishio, Japan, on Oct. 2, 2026. (Yonhap) Jang lost by unanimous decision against Khalokov, with the score in favor of the Uzbek fighter 5-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27). Khalokov, the reigning Olympic champion with the 2025 world title under his belt, captured his second straight Asian Games gold medal. Jang traded punches with Khalokov from the get-go, with one of the five judges favoring Jang in the opening round. In each of the next two rounds, however, all five judges gave the upper hand to Khalokov, denying Jang a chance to become the first Asian Games boxing champion from South Korea since 2014. In the very next bout, Kim took his shot against Panghal but lost 4-0 (30-26, 28-28, 30-26, 30-26, 30-26). One judged rule in favor of Kim in the first round, but no judge thought Kim was the better fighter in the second round, despite some promising moments for the South Korean. Kim won over one judge in the third round, but it was not enough to beat Panghal, who became the first Indian boxer to win an Asiad gold.
