The full Senate approved, in general terms, reforms to the Foreign Investment Law, which seeks to strengthen the evaluation of acquisitions carried out through foreign investment that could pose threats or dangers to national security.
In the ordinary session, the reform promoted by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, which grants new powers to the armed forces, was approved with 65 votes in favor from Morena and its allies, and 30 against from the PAN, PRI, and MC.
MC Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas said from the floor that this reform allows for the militarization of the economy, since the armed forces will have a voice and a vote in deciding who invests in the country.
According to the reform, agencies and institutions specialized in defense, intelligence, public security, oversight, and the prevention of illicit operations are incorporated into the National Foreign Investment Commission, along with a specific scrutiny procedure for this type of operation.
Among these agencies are the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Secretariat of National Defense (Defense), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), and the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT), which will have a voice and a vote on the National Commission.
