(ATTN: RECASTS throughout; ADDS photo) SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean food company CJ Cheiljedang Corp. said Tuesday it swung to a net loss in the second quarter from a year earlier due to non-operating losses. In the three months that ended in June, the company shifted to a net loss of 3.9 billion won (US$2.7 million) from a net profit of 209.1 billion won in the same period in 2025, the company said in a press release. "The won's weakness and higher grain prices resulted in valuation losses on foreign exchange hedging and derivatives products, cutting into the quarterly bottom line," it said. Operating profit fell 27.1 percent to 257.6 billion won in the second quarter from 353.1 billion won a year earlier. With domestic demand remaining sluggish, higher expenses stemming from high oil prices and increased raw material costs weighed on quarterly earnings, the company said. Sales rose 1.7 percent to 7.36 trillion won from 7.24 trillion won in the same period. For the first six months of the year, net income plunged 55.8 percent to 115.97 billion won from 262.58 billion won a year earlier. Starting in the third quarter, the company said it plans to further strengthen its overseas operations and reorganize its business portfolio to enhance profitability. CJ Cheiljedang currently operates 34 production facilities overseas, including 20 in the United States, five in Japan, four in China, three in Vietnam, and one each in Germany and Australia. The company also operates 17 plants in South Korea. It is building two additional production facilities, one in Hungary and another in the U. S. state of South Dakota.
