The Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL) expressed its solidarity with the people and government of Colombia after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the country this Monday. In this regard, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, president of COPPPAL, called on the political parties that make up the organization to support humanitarian aid efforts in Colombia in coordination with their governments. "We express our deep concern over the preliminary reports of injuries, trapped persons, and structural damages in Quibdó, Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Armenia, and other cities in western and central Colombia," he said. "COPPPAL, as an organization that groups together the progressive and democratic forces of Latin America and the Caribbean, joins the pain of the affected families and hopes for the quick recovery of the injured and the full restoration of the impacted areas," he added. Furthermore, he expressed recognition for the work of aid agencies, local and departmental authorities who are working on damage assessment and emergency response. "We reaffirm our bonds of brotherhood with the member parties of COPPPAL in Colombia and with the entire Colombian people, confident that with unity, solidarity, and strength they will overcome this difficult moment," he declared. He also sent a brotherly and supportive hug from the parties active in COPPPAL to Abelardo de la Espriella, president of Colombia, which he asked to be transmitted to the Colombian people.
