The United States responded on Monday (10) to Brazil's statement to the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the additional tariffs imposed by them on Brazilian products. In the response, the North American country said it was ready to discuss and to meet the request for consultations made by the Brazilian government. "The United States accepts Brazil's request to participate in the consultations. We are ready to engage with the authorities of your mission at a mutually convenient date for consultations," replied the U.S. government. Brazil presented its arguments as a request for consultations with the United States within the WTO dispute settlement system. The document outlines the scenario, including the US allegations of being treated discriminatorily by Brazil. The consultation request represents the first formal step in the WTO dispute settlement system. At this stage, countries seek to negotiate a solution to the conflict before the possible establishment of a panel to analyze the case. Brazil filed its complaint with the WTO on July 27, arguing that the tariffs imposed by the United States are "inconsistent" with the rules set by the organization. "The measures in question [taken by the US] appear to be inconsistent with the US obligations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994," Brazil stated. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade provides the normative basis for the application of tariffs by WTO members. Brazil also claims that it is being discriminated against by the US in trade relations compared to other WTO countries. China Authorities of the Chinese government also expressed themselves in the same consultation request made by Brazil and requested permission to participate in the consultations. China is Brazil's largest trading partner. "China has a substantial commercial interest in these consultations," the document said. China states that the US also imposed "certain measures" on products originating from the country. "These measures affect all Chinese exports to the United States, subject to specific exemptions, and particularly the competitive conditions for these products originating in China and sold in the US market, as a result of additional tariffs imposed. China respectfully requests that its participation in the consultations in this dispute be allowed," it added.
