A week marked by rainfall, snow, wind, and low temperatures is expected in different areas of Chile. According to the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC), the events will begin in the north of the country and then move towards the central zone, while interior sectors will face frosts of up to -3 °C. Photo: Diego Martin/Aton Chile DIEGO MARTIN/ATON CHILE Rain, snow, and winds in the north Between Tuesday the 11th and Wednesday the 12th, an upper disturbance will cause precipitation between the regions of Arica and Parinacota and Coquimbo. The phenomenon could leave up to 70 millimeters of water in foothill sectors and up to 80 centimeters of snow in mountain areas of Atacama. DMC meteorologist Alonso Guajardo explained in an interview with Emol that in the north “there is a trough that will generate the precipitation we are expecting to occur from today until Wednesday.” In Antofagasta, moderate to heavy precipitation is expected, with about 30 millimeters of water and subsequently between 30 and 40 centimeters of snow. In Atacama, meanwhile, around 30 millimeters of liquid precipitation and up to 50 centimeters of snow could accumulate. The situation will also be accompanied by wind. In Atacama, Guajardo warned that there will be “winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, mainly in mountain sectors,” so snowfalls could occur with blizzards. In Coquimbo, the DMC maintains an active alert. “To the north of Vicuña, there will be 10 to 30 millimeters of precipitation in the foothills and 30 to 40 centimeters of snow for Wednesday the 12th,” the meteorologist noted. Rain, snow, and frosts: the sequence of fronts that will bring precipitation from north to south in Chile Central-South: frosts and a new frontal system While the north concentrates the most activity during the first days of the week, between Monday and Tuesday, low temperatures will be recorded in the central-southern region. The DMC forecasts minimums of up to -3 °C in interior sectors between Maule and Biobío. In Quinta Normal, Santiago, minimum temperatures will hover around 3 °C. Then, on Thursday the 13th, a new frontal system will move from Valparaíso southward, generating showers in the Metropolitan Region and increased activity in Biobío. Ranges of up to 70 km/h are also expected in coastal sectors of La Araucanía and Los Lagos. In Santiago, the system will arrive “between the night of Thursday the 13th and the early morning of Friday the 14th.” According to Guajardo, the precipitation will be of showers and will reach around 10 millimeters, although the amount could vary depending on the sector of the capital. Austral Zone Meanwhile, in the southern zone, high pressures will maintain stable conditions with little or no precipitation at least until Friday the 14th. From Wednesday, a temperature drop and morning frost are also expected, according to the DMC.
