Comments The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, convened an extraordinary plenary session of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party this Monday to evaluate transformation proposals aimed at driving structural reforms to liberalize the island's economy, in accordance with the announcement made by the island's leader last Friday. "On June 17, convened by the Politburo, the Extraordinary Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba will meet to evaluate proposals for transformations that we recently outlined in statements to the press," the head of the island's Executive stated in a social media message. The current call aligns with his previous announcement to promote a package of structural reforms aimed at liberalizing the island's economy, inspired by the market economy models of China and Vietnam, with the goal of counteracting the impact of economic and energy sanctions from the United States government. In this way, the measures presented by the island's leader come after the economic pressure on Cuba in recent months driven by the Donald Trump administration, aimed at forcing political and economic reforms on the island.
