Rod Stewart praised King Charles III following the British monarch’s trip to the United States — which included an address to a joint meeting of Congress and a visit to the White House — telling him that he put “that little ratbag in his place” during the American tour.
“May I say, well done in the Americas,” the “Maggie May” singer said as he shook Charles’s hand at a Monday event in London.
“You were superb, absolutely superb,” Stewart, standing next to The Rolling Stones’s Ronnie Wood, told the 77-year-old king.
“You put that little ratbag in his place,” Stewart said.
Charles appeared to laugh off the comment according to reports from journalists capturing the exchange, but it’s unclear if he responded to the remark.
While Stewart didn’t indicate who he was referring to in the brief conversation, the 81-year-old singer has said he’s “not a great fan” of President Trump.
“I knew him very, very well. I used to go to his house,” Stewart said in an interview last year.
“But since he became president, he became another guy. Somebody I didn’t know,” the British songwriter said of Trump.
King Charles made headlines last month when he delivered a historic address before Congress, telling lawmakers that “in this unpredictable environment” the alliance between the U. S. and the U. K. “cannot rest on past achievements, or assume that foundational principles simply endure.”
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” he said, calling for international cooperation.
During his U. S. travels, Charles also met with Trump at the White House, along with Democratic and Republican leaders of both chambers of Congress, and made a stop in New York.
Trump described Charles as a “fantastic person” following the meeting.
“They’re incredible people and it’s a real honor,” the president said of Charles and Queen Camilla.
