The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that raising the age limit for using social media platforms within the European Union is under consideration, and a proposal could be presented as early as this summer.
"I believe we need to consider postponing the use of social media," Ursula von der Leyen said in Copenhagen, at a conference on protecting children in the age of AI. "Depending on the results, we could present a legislative proposal this summer."
Ursula von der Leyen, however, indicated that she did not want to anticipate the conclusions of the expert group, which is currently deliberating on the safety of children online. Several countries, including France, have taken the initiative to raise the age limit for using social media to 15, or have advocated for a solution at the European Union level.
"Childhood and early adolescence are formative years, and I believe we should give our children more time to become resilient during this vulnerable phase," von der Leyen explained, adding that the EU could draw inspiration from Australia, a "pioneer" in this area.
