By Lee Minji SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- Park Eun-bin, who delivered a clever and empathic performance as an autistic lawyer in the megahit drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" (2022), has once again teamed up with director Yoo In-shik for the new Netflix series "The Wonderfools," an action-packed comedy capturing an unlikely crew who come to possess superpowers. In the comic adventure drama set in 1999 at the turn of the century, Park plays Eun Chae-ni, a short-tempered resident of the fictional city of Haeseong who has long suffered from chronic heart disease but one day acquires the ability to teleport. She is joined by other residents of the town who suddenly become superheroes, including her good-hearted friend who peels onions in the kitchen of her grandmother's restaurant and a grumpy father who is overlooked by his family after losing his job in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis and failing at every fresh attempt to make ends meet. Together the unlikely superheroes, alongside a mysterious public servant played by singer-actor Cha Eun-woo, team up to protect their peaceful town from villains. (Yonhap) Park, who has won accolades for her performance in "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," said she first heard about "The Wonderfools" during a chat with Yoo on the sidelines of a shooting session for the 2022 legal drama. "I heard about it in front of a 'gimbap' place during filming for 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo.' I felt it would be such a fun project ... and one with big potential," she said in a press conference in Seoul, adding she did not expect the collaboration to take place this quickly. Yoo, the director, said he always felt there was nothing impossible for Park as he explained why she was cast as the main lead. "I was amazed during the filming for 'Extraordinary Attorney Yoo.' I felt there is nothing impossible for this actor and that she can do anything," Yoo said. "She has a very good sense of humor, bold and courageous, and I was grateful she joined without hesitation." Yoo, who grew up watching superhero and action adventures, such as "The Goonies" and the Indiana Jones series, said he hopes "The Wonderfools" will deliver a sense of fun that he felt during childhood to viewers. "Basically, this genre has to be fun, like going to an amusement park and feeling the tingle of excitement the moment you buckle your safety belt. There should be fun and laughter till the end that makes you hope it will not end, and I also hope it delivers a sense of heartwarming feeling as well," he said. Park echoed the sentiment. "I started this project because I wanted to have fun," she said. "Of all the characters I have portrayed, Chae-ni seems to have the simplest mindset. I enjoyed learning her world, and I hope that viewers can share that experience." The series is set to premiere at 5 p.m. Friday on Netflix.
