Sheinbaum receives representatives of the CNTE (National Coordinator of Teachers' Unions) from Chiapas at the National Palace; tensions remain regarding a potential boycott of the World Cup.
Following a protest held by Section VII of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) in Palenque, Chiapas, in recent days, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo met with its members this Monday, May 11th, at the National Palace to hear their local demands.
Members of Section VII of the CNTE rejected the announcement made by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to shorten the school calendar due to the heat and the World Cup, accusing it of being a unilateral action.
"This is not an issue for us," said Isael González, Secretary General of Section VII of Chiapas, upon arriving at the National Palace.

"They did that unilaterally, we didn't expect something like that. We know that the secretaries of education are meeting again today. We are simply pointing out that they said it was a demand from teachers and parents, but I don't know if it's a demand from you, the parents, but we, the teachers, are not asking for more vacation days," he stated.
"The parents have also told us that they didn't ask for it either, so it's not an issue for us," he added.
"Our central demand is to defend public education," said the members of the dissenting teachers' union, stating that they also demand greater investment, the creation of new teaching positions, and the reactivation of the National Single Negotiation Commission (CNUN).
