A massive operation carried out by the Chilean police (Carabineros) and the Criminal Investigation Agency (PDI) across seven regions of the country has resulted in the arrest of over 450 people.
In the courtyard of Los Naranjos, at the Palacio de La Moneda, the Minister of Security, Trinidad Steinert, along with the Director General of the Carabineros (police force), Marcelo Araya, and the Director General of the PDI (investigative police), Eduardo Cerna, shared details about a joint operation by both police forces that resulted in the arrest of more than 450 people. The police operation took place between May 6th and 7th in seven regions of the country, specifically in nine cities: Arica, Iquique, Valparaíso, Santiago, Puente Alto, Rancagua, Curicó, Los Ángeles, and Concepción. With the participation of 1,675 officers, 1,007 inspections were carried out and 8,592 preventive controls were conducted, resulting in the arrest of 459 people, including 223 foreign nationals who entered through irregular border crossings. In addition, 47 vehicles were impounded, seven weapons were seized, along with 28 rounds of ammunition, and more than 9 kilograms of drugs were confiscated. General Araya stated that in recent months, the police presence has been strengthened "at the border, on roads, and on major highways." He also noted that there have been "a considerable number of identity checks and vehicle inspections in various locations and at different times." For his part, Director Cerna reported that among those arrested were individuals who were fugitives from justice, "for serious crimes such as drug offenses, weapons violations, vehicle theft, sexual offenses, and robbery with intimidation and violence." "In addition, we have continued to monitor the legal status of foreigners in Chile, and nearly a thousand of them were checked, with more than 236 found to be in irregular situations due to unauthorized entry. More than 46% of these individuals are citizens of Venezuelan nationality," he said. The Minister assured that these types of operations will continue "throughout this administration and throughout this government, implementing strategies for that purpose." She also explained that the areas targeted were not chosen randomly. "We intervened in nine municipalities, and these actions were based on a strategic study coordinated with the PDI and Carabineros. I want to make it clear that this is the result of coordination and instructions from the Ministry of Security," she asserted.
