Even as the country grapples with outrage and shock over the case of Víctor Hugo Quero, who was forcibly disappeared and died while in state custody, the Democratic Unity Platform, in its Anaco chapter, has denounced the death of former councilman José García, a political leader of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), who had been detained since February 10th. Regional media (Anzoátegui) reported that representatives of the opposition coalition have requested that the circumstances surrounding the death be clarified, which occurred in the holding cells of the Anaco Municipal Police, where the former councilman from the city of Anaco was being held while under investigation. William Ross, spokesperson for the PUD and coordinator of the La Causa R party in Anaco, expressed regret over García's death and voiced concern about the conditions in which the events occurred within the police facility. Teo Valiente, coordinator of Voluntad Popular in the oil-rich city, stated that the case should be investigated "for the sake of upholding human rights," arguing that any death while in state custody requires a thorough and independent review. Earlier, former prosecutor Zair Mundaray stated on his X account that the case of García Sabino, who was detained for reporting alleged corruption, should be investigated by the Public Ministry. According to unofficial reports, published by the newspaper Versión Final, the former councilman, who had been detained since February for the alleged crime of aggravated fraud related to the delivery of motorcycles, was found hanged in the bathroom area of the detention center. A commission from Caracas is expected to arrive to determine the cause of death. Local media indicated that a commission from the Scientific, Criminal and Forensic Investigations Corps (CICPC), Anaco Municipal Delegation, went to the scene to begin the corresponding investigations and determine whether it was a suicide or if there was intervention by third parties. The body was transferred to the National Service of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (Senamecf) in Barcelona, where a post-mortem examination will be performed. Authorities are also awaiting the arrival of a special commission from Caracas to assist in the complete clarification of the case.
